Snape and Gryffindor

This is how I feel whenever I think about whether Snape should have been in Gryffindor: It makes me want to scream. I think Dumbledore implied that only Gryffindors have courage, which is ridiculous. Or perhaps this artist is saying something about the fact that if Snape had been in Gryffindor he wouldn't have followed his friends into the Death ( Read more... )

I didn't take Dumbledore as implying that "only Gryffindors have courage." Dumbledore has already affirmed Snape's bravery both to Snape himself ("You are a braver man by far...") and in public, at Karkaroff's hearing ("at great risk to himself".....)

I think Dumbledore is observing that Snape isn't just brave, he's VERY brave, and that this bravery has become one of Snape's ascendant values.

Thanks, Myrtle. And I think that's a good interpretation.

(Although I know that other readers sometimes believe Dumbledore was implying that Snape should have been in Gryffindor.)
