Book 64!

Sep 04, 2021 17:52

This is the first of, I think, 3 or 4 books in a series. The cover blurb also said it's been made into a TV show. Both things indicate that lots of people liked it. Alas, I found it a bit of a slog.

64. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

This is the story of two friends in the slums of mid-century Italy, Lila and Lenu. Their lives are rife with violence, harassment and uncertainty. I found the book to be slow moving and filled with 'tell's. While reading it I was reminded of the phrase "my truth". There seems to be no Truth in the story, just Lenu's ever-changing version of the truth. It was interesting in its depiction of 1950's Naples, but the two main characters were both so unpleasant that I have no desire to read any further novels.

** No one knows who Elena Ferrante is. Three different writers have been pegged as using this as a pen name, and they've all denied it.
