So, I love competition-based reality shows. They are also my go-to comfort-TV when I am stressed out. And I feel like I am in comp reality show HEAVEN right now because there are currently THREE shows airing that I'm watching ( Read more... )

You and my husband would have gotten along well because he loved those kinds of shows. I can handle cooking competitions, but that's about it.

Also, I love the Murderbot series! I need to get caught up here soon. :)

I love watching physical challenges. The things that these people do are amazing! And if the challenge is combined with a puzzle aspect? Even better. I used to watch Masterchef as well, and I love love love the Great British Bake-Off. Basically I enjoy any reality show where the contestants have to DO something. I can't stand the ones where they just sit around and gossip, or the challenges are super lame (like Big Brother.)

Troy loved The Amazing Race for that reason, I think. I couldn't ever get into that kind of thing, but I do love Top Chef. :D

OH The Amazing Race! Yup, watched that one for years as well. I recently just watched the last four seasons of the Canadian version, which is pretty fun as well.

It's time I admitted it. I am a competitive-reality-TV junkie.

Damn, you are booking it!

I love your reports of all your progress...things read, things watched! I am in awe. FanSee

P.S. Why do I think I've read something by Martha Wells? The name seems mighty familiar.

I feel like posting about it kind of motivates me, just like the prompts do. And I like reading other people's opinions about books, tv and movies, so hopefully they like mine, too. LOL

The only things I've read by Martha Wells are her Murderbot Diaries series, but she does appear to be a very prolific writer.

I totally agree with you (and so does my sister, ha!) that Fugitive Telemetry is the most disappointing of the Murderbot series. We both loved the bots but felt that there was a disconnect between the timeframe the book is set in and with Murderbot's emotional growth.

I stay away from spoilers about books until after I've read them, so going in I usually only know what the synopsis said and maybe a non-spoilery review on Goodreads or here on LJ that I've seen. So I only found out after I read Fugitive Telemetry that it's supposed to be set *before* the most recent Murderbot and ART book (Network Effect?) Which doesn't make sense to me as a choice by the writer, but maybe she got stuck on what kind of adventure Murderbot and ART would have.

You and I are complete opposites with competitive reality shows! Lol! I don't like the drama; I'm more interested in the results of their activity!

Great work with the books!

Well, we do *kind of sort of maybe* agree a liiiiiittle bit. I don't mind a little drama but I could do without some of the more outrageous camera-hog people that some of the shows cast. Mostly I think the awesome things they do outweigh the really crazy draaaaaama.

And judging!! Half the time the drama comes from the damn judges. I think on The Block the judges can just be so harsh and mean! On the most recent episode of The Block NZ that I watched (I'm now on Season 8), the judge Jason said that a room made him want to vomit. I MEAN. That's not a critique, that's just rude.

Those do sound like fun! I have some reality shows too that are comfort tv for me. I watch My Big Fat Fabulous Life and I adore her. Sometimes I'll just put on reruns to play in the background so there is something light and funny going on. So many shows are so dark and heavy these days.

In the past I have put on old seasons of Survivor to watch as I'm doing something else (working on my not-really-a-bullet-journal or a puzzle, for example.) I don't have to pay close attention but I can look up and watch the bits that interest me. :)

I never thought about that, about the trend in TV for everything to be, like you said, dark and heavy. I'm sure that absolutely plays a part in it as well.
