Yes indeed. For a person who has been doing this job for almost five years it's incredibly easy to confuse the two. There's hardly any difference, really. Roughly the difference between a horse and an elephant. That is to say, INCREDIBLY similar.
Indeed if you look at these helpful diagrams you can see that main signals (on the left) are almost identical to the shunt signals (on the right). You can see in the last photo how when used together they are seriously hard to distinguish
