The internet is failing ghost_lingering, so here is a post that I believe she has been trying to make for four hours ... not mine!:

Hey all,

This has taken me FOREVER to post. You realize that fandom killed lj right? Anyway.

I posted a suggestion here in a comment on the initial community post, but thought I'd repost here, edited and expanded, so more people ( Read more... )

YES. Very yes. I don't like pedophiles here, and I'd help with it.

Perverted Justice, which seems to be a legit anti-pedo-cyber-org thing

Except that at least one of the communities they list as a pedophile comm, boysfuckingboys is in fact a community for m/m erotic fanfic and original fic. They just happened to use the word "boys" in their name. The community was suspended during strikethrough07 but has since been restored.

As for your proposal . . . I think pedophilia is disgusting, but I have no desire to be an internet vigilante. Patrolling the internet for child porn, etc. should be left to law enforcement professionals who actually know what they're doing.

Agreed.

I think also as fandom members who have to be very careful about not giving wrong impressions regarding the difference between what fans do and child porn, we need to be even more careful about doing anything that might imply any kind of prurient interest in actual child porn. Even with a legitimate organization, people might question fandom members' motives, given the sensitivity of what's at stake. It's possible the organization wouldn't even want fandom folk as volunteers.

Also: pedophilia is not a crime.
Child molesting is a crime.

Bigotry is not a crime.
Gay-bashing is a crime.

Not everyone with a creepy psychological disorder is a criminal, even if almost all the crimes of that type are committed by people with the affliction.

I don't want an LJ ToS that says "we don't allow people who might be prone to certain types of crime here."

Okay. So, assuming the question becomes less "whether" and more "how" (as I hope that it does), here are some questions we need to ask. Otherwise, this group could become the wankiest bunch of self-righteous morons in fandom.

How do we want to set up this group? Which subgroups are we going to try and bring together with it? (I think your (ghost_lingering's)suggestions in this comment are a really good place to start, and I think coordination with proper LE types (surely there's someone in LE in fandom who we could liase through?) would also be important in distinguishing us from vigilante groups such as WfI ( ... )

Which brings me to my second point. Which I'm still thinking through, so bear with me. An inter-lj group looking to review questionable material would...hmmm, be more possible than an inter-fandom group I think, because we fans very rarely agree on anything.

What if then (inter-lj) group wasn't able to actual suspend journals or anything, only recommend to lj a course of action. Sooooo, say for instance the group consisted of these people who I am making up off the top of my head:

--a long time lj volunteer
--a writer of original lit erotica
--a newish lj volunteer who wanted to get involved specifically with this program
--a member of fandom who is completely squicked by chan
--a member of fandom who is an active chan writer
--someone with fairly extensive knowledge of internet law
--someone with fairly extensive knowledge of law re: pedophilia
--someone who has worked/works with a group like PeeJ (Perverted Justice)

These guidelines definitely have me very interested. Perhaps contact LJ and let them know about this idea so that everyone can work together (with open-communication) about what they're doing and how it's going to be done.

I seriously think you were stealing my brianwaves, because at work I was seriously pondering doing something extremely close to these lines. Looking for the actual journals that should have been suspended/deleted - besides our HP or other comms.

I'm very much into fandom, but that isn't why I was so angry with LiveJournals actions. I was angry because in trying to do a good deed, they rushed it and did a half-assed job. Suspending hundreds of innocent communities and journals, while only getting a fraction of the real pedophiles journals and communities. The other thing that made me angry was the fact that not only did they delete fandom journals, but support communities for the victims of child abuse/rape/molestation. I'm not a victim myself (thank god for that!) but I do know people and have some pretty close friends that are such. Something like this never should have happened. It did. And in doing so it struck more than just innocent bystanders, but victims too.

So, yes, lets band together and find the real fucking perverts. ^

Just posting a list of some I found with a quick interests search, and then by further exploring the content inside the journals. See, unlike LJ and 6A I take the time to make sure I'm accusing the right people. Not all are pedo's persay, but haters and other such journals that shouldn't have survived the suspension spree that LJ had went on.

saille_blows: Not a pedo journal, but a hater account. Why do these survive the mass deletions/suspensions of journals even with interests listed such as "child rape" and "stalking" ? Hmmm?
saille_bukkake: Once again, a hater journal. These are so pointless.
sallie_sux: And again with another hater journal.
oddnumbered: Interests listed such as - "anything explicit with children, child molestation, child porn, child rape, child sex" and "pedophilia". Some pretty questionable userpics. Plus their main userpic is disturbing.
dr_frezfrez Once again, extremely questionable interests. Also various mentions of 'porn' (though no real specifications) in their actual journal. The other thing that bugs me is some of the content expresses a want to physically ( ... )
