Oh I'd LOVE to see her work through what it was to be Lacey, and to come back to herself. Or even, heck, talk to Rumple about being in an asylum for 28 yrs, or how she tried to get back to him but Regina kidnapped her...or Rum to confess that he regretted letting her go in the first place. All this deep relationship development, fallout, healing, growth, intimacy--I wish we saw ANY of it instead of endless rehashing of MUCH less interesting other character's traumas (that's the same thing every.single.week). Sigh. But then I guess we always have fanfic. But yes--Lacey was such an opposite to Belle, it must have been a huge wrench to go through that and then also to be interacting with your true love in both identities: SO much intriguing interaction we could mine for genuinely interesting conversation and introspection. HOW we instead ended up with her feeling that her attempts to be heroic failed IDK :/

I'm liking the Ariel and Belle vibe a lot, but yes, we need more Belle/Ruby!

I'd say "at least that's what fic is for," but I'm honestly not certain how many fic writers would be willing to cover the topic. I'm not sure what it is about that section of fandom, but people tend to get really protective is someone even hints that there might be some issues with it.

For example, as much as I love the pairing, a lot of my fic for it tends to explore some of the more problematic aspects of it. (The difference in power dynamics, Rumpelstiltskin's history in general, the entire Lacey storyline, etc.) I've gotten some eye-raising comments from people who were upset that I dare imply that the way the relationship is being portrayed on the show isn't perfect, asking me why I'm bothering to write Rumpelstiltskin/Belle if I hate them so much. Which... I don't hate them. At all. I just think there are some issues with it (which is part of the reason I like it so much!)

Crikey, from domestic violence to Stockholm syndrome to age differences, Rumbelle is front-loaded with Issues, and I agree, that's what makes it interesting! Layered even! I'm so bored with politically correct TV couples, I love Rumbelle. Plus, I think had the writers realized this one little season one episode would become so pivotal to fandom (and, imo, keeping the viewers around) they might have toned down the violence or even the set up of him forcing her to come with him (in a way). So I am kinda glad the Rumbelle love took them by surprise. (Did they think people hadn't already fallen head over heels for RC?)

Exactly! I love them, but the two of them are basically the definition of "dysfunctional relationship." I don't understand how people can possibly argue otherwise. :-/
