It messed up mine - when I first booted up my also Vista computer last Thursday, it said I didn't have Windows installed on the machine. I followed the age old advice and immediately switched it off and after a pause back on again and thankfully it came back okay and has been okay since but I think it may well be something in the update and I got lucky to get away with it.
I don't know if that helps but I hope your computer is better soon.
I had the same thing happen on a Windows update 3 months ago. Thankfully, after numerous attempts I got it the computer to recover to it's factory setup through safe mode, but that took about 2 1/2 days of frustration to get there. No problems since then. I'd save what you can just in case, and clear off as much room on the HD as you can so that the computer can utilize those resources -- safemode ran better once I allocated more diskspace to be used by windows 7 startup.
Trying googling black screen of death (because blue is so passe!) to see if there's any other solutions. BSOD is one of the reasons a lot of people switched to Windows 7. If you get your files back it's probably worth getting an upgrade. 7 is much more stable.

The thing that always fixes my old, old, old computer is opening it up and dusting it out and checking the connections.
