Re: my last post

So far, on the Facebook front, the wife of one of my preachers when I was younger has told me that I need to grow up (publicly, on the original wall post), a couple of people have told me that I must not actually realize what I'm saying (privately, via message), and one person has told me (privately, via message) that I'm nothing but a stupid brat ( Read more... )

I'm so, so sorry. The hatefulness of some people, I don't even know...

*hugs*

::sigh:: I really am sorry to hear that :(

This is going to sound odd coming from me, but going to church tomorrow might actually help, since my impression is that the church here is much more open and liberal. I dunno. Just a thought that maybe reminding yourself that not all religious people are like that is a good idea? That sometimes helps me.

Or booze might help ;) I was going to invite you over for dinner but Vomitous Boy is back in the house and I don't think infecting you with a nasty cold would be helpful.

This helps me a lot of the time, too.

♥ Hang in there, stick by what you believe. You're not wrong, and you are very strong for expressing your beliefs and working toward a progressive future (especially when the people you know from growing up are clinging to stagnant, oppressive beliefs).

It's definitely more open and liberal than the one that I grew up in, but it still has its moments. Enough that I'm really not sure I want to risk it, because I really think that all it will take is one minor comment to set me off.

Most of the religious people I know aren't hateful bigots. Up here in the wicked north we believe God values love and fair treatment for everyone.

For what it's worth, my pastor was over for dinner and is 100% on your side. No pastor, or pastor's wife, or any other representative of a church body, has any right to be so dismissive and condescending toward anyone, especially in public. Christians are called upon to demonstrate their faith through actions, especially to outsiders, which obviously the loud, obnoxious, intolerant types are failing at more than anyone else. Also, a woman's body is her own to govern, and God wouldn't make homosexuals only to condemn them. There was also some discussion about God being perfectly capable of getting around birth control if His purposes required it, after all we all know how abstinence worked out for Mary.

Also, separation of church and state is important for a reason, yadda yadda. Then there was lots of stuff about insurance company regulations that suck which mostly centered around someone's arthritis meds.

(I didn't name names or even say what state you were from, but I hope you don't mind that I mentioned you.)
