--

It was a dream come true, only without the rainbow by the horizon or the happy flowers singing for him.  Instead they were in dark alley, running away with clasped hands and huffing breaths. The men behind them were stubborn, angry, running after them, but Sungmin knew he’d be okay now that he was here.

Siwon.

Siwon who just happened to be passing by and seeing him cornered by strangers, out of sheer luck. Well, maybe? Sungmin was guessing anyway.

Siwon and his silent personality yet roaring bravery and compassion of those who were in need. Siwon, the underclassman of his school with a screaming popularity.

Siwon who was also Sungmin’s almost-two-years one-sided love.

It just happened so fast. Sungmin was struggling warding off the men, guarding his school bag with his personal belongings inside like his life. They wanted it, like the thieves they were. Hand it over, they said, but Sungmin knew they wanted more. Oh, they wanted more if their hungry eyes and licking lips had any indication.

Sungmin almost put up a fight, until he realized he was outnumbered. And frankly frightened when he saw one man wedged out a knife. There was a plunged at him but he jumped away. Then there was a sting at his shoulder but took no note of it.

Oh, shit. He was already backing away, ready to flee. When he felt another tug at his arm, there was no chance to look, even to react. Only to run as fast as he could when he was pulled away. It was then he realized the back right in front of him. Doubting it, then confirming it. Siwon’s.

Him and his school uniform, probably his way back to his home.

“Wha-“

“Hurry. We need to get away from them fast.”

The adrenaline made him scurry like an athlete, running for the life of him. Of theirs. And when they reached a brighter district with crowds and passerby’s, Siwon took him to another street. There was a building, with a guard by the entrance.

“Good evening, Mister Choi,” the guard said as though automatic. He halted at the sight of the heaving two. “Oh, did something happen? You look out of breath, sir.”

“Some goons are after us. Heighten security, alright? They can be close by.” Siwon said in a manner that surprised Sungmin. He sounded so controlled and authorative - unlike the gentle and respectful tone he always spoke of with at school - and he had the guard standing alert so easily.

“Yes, sir. I’ll inform the others. Tomorrow, I will report to the police about this too.”

“Okay, good.” He pulled the speechless Sungmin inside, away, to the elevator of the top floor. Sungmin could be jumping around for joy now, doing boogie when he finally had the chance to stay in the same place with Siwon - and he just saved him too - when he realized the stinging on his shoulder doubled.

He didn’t want to groan out loud, in pain, but it hurt like crap.

“Did they get you?” Siwon asked immediately, concerned. He was reaching for Sungmin when Sungmin backed a step.

“No, no. I’m okay. J-just a scratch, maybe. I’m okay.” He stuttered, subtly gripping the wound and smiling a little forcibly. “I mean, I’m okay. If you weren’t around, it could’ve gotten worse. Or something.” Sungmin didn’t want worrying anyone, especially him when they were practically strangers.

Did Siwon even know they belong to the same school? Did he know about Sungmin, his upperclassman? Sungmin wondered.

Siwon the popular guy and Sungmin the not. Two contrasting worlds. And that was the reason why the admiration and interest stretched for a long period because Sungmin was behind the shadow, looking at the radiant underclass Siwon impress faculty and students more and more of each year, of his charisma and looks. And especially of his good nature too.

Sungmin remembered hoards of girls groveling at Siwon one time, asking him out. They were even boys going after him. But Siwon politely turned them down, all of them. Did he want someone? Was he already having interest with another person? Who?

He was riding his mental train thoughts with confusing and jumbled railways - a bad habit of his actually - that he missed being dragged inside and being pushed down a sofa. His bag no longer at his hold. And there was Siwon looming above him.

“There’s blood over there.” He pointed a spot at his shoulder, where the cut must had been, and grimaced. The red almost looked dried up. “You can’t tell me that it’s a scratch. Wait, here. Don’t move. I’ll be right back.”

He was ready to protest - out of embarrassment. He was being taken care of by a man who knew nothing about him. As expected of the good-natured Siwon to be so concerned. Even to a stranger like him.

“Hey, get out of those clothes.” Siwon instructed. On his hands were damp cloth and a bottle of antiseptic.

And that made Sungmin’s brain move into a screeching halt. Off his clothes? Off his clothes?

He wasn’t ready. Never going to be when Siwon’s looking at him like a hawk. “I c-can do it myself. Just give me a cotton and-“

“Are you this stubborn, Sungmin-sshi? I insist. Unless you want me doing it myself?”

“Ack! No!”

“I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” Siwon held his two occupied hands, wanting a truce. That was then Sungmin’s brain finally clicked in realization of their conversation.

“You know me?” Sungmin asked, surprised. He watched Siwon sat next to him, smiling softly at him. The pain on his shoulder suddenly ignored in the favor of intently looking at Siwon.

“Yeah, I do. Lee Sungmin, the fourth year? I see you always in the library.” Siwon made bobbing gestures of his shoulders, indicating his previous instruction to Sungmin and Sungmin followed like he was entranced, shedding off his top without a little struggling at first. “Oh, that looks terrible.” Siwon frowned. He began patting the upset spot, a shallow cut and Sungmin winced.

“Sorry.”

“It’s fine.” Sungmin assured, looking away and biting his lower lip to hold down the sting shooting up his body. He didn’t realize he was gotten that bad with the men earlier but at least it wasn’t worse like a bullet on him or a horrible gash.

In quick record he was already patched up - with big clean gauze taped to his shoulder - and Siwon was filing the aid kit away towards another room.

“Thank you.” Sungmin said, quietly, and looking anything but Siwon as he shimmied into his shirt when the latter returned. “You really are nice of a person. A lot of people at school said you’re something. A good kind of something.”

“Won’t you ask why I know you?” Siwon reached for his arm, stopping Sungmin to get his bag on the ground. “Don’t you wonder why I was at the alley?”

“You were passing by?” He tried for guesses and Siwon shook his head; his hand gliding downwards to Sungmin’s and squeezing it, transferring his warmth.

“I followed you.” Siwon confessed, looking flushed all of sudden. “I know you, Lee Sungmin, ever since I saw you back ushering at the Opening Ceremony two years ago?”

Ah, he remembered that. But he was too preoccupied with the rowdy freshmen that he had no time to mingle with them, to introduce himself as their senior. Sungmin had found himself under Heechul’s flamboyant managing that time and became marshal during the event, much to his dismay.

“I, uh,” Siwon cleared his throat; his grip tightening and slowly trapping Sungmin against the wall. “I kind of liked you since then?”

The way he concentrated without faltering seemed so endearing. But the shake of voice said otherwise and that Siwon was trying to convey something serious. That he wasn’t fooling around. Sungmin realized that, willing to calm himself but his chest was pounding too much.

“Is that the reason why you’ve been rejecting people who’s asking you out?” Sungmin asked, couldn’t helped himself. He was watching a smirking Siwon next.

“You took note of those? I made sure to keep those under wraps, didn’t let anyone know. Were you watching me too?”

Sungmin glowed red, feeling exposed. And the flat surface behind him indicated that he had nowhere to run to except towards Siwon. Siwon and his firm grasp and dancing eyes. He was smiling like an idiot Sungmin had never seen before.

“I still am.” Came out as murmured and Sungmin was ready to fling himself on the floor to hide after saying that. But Siwon was quick to enclose him to tight, lung-breaking hug; his arms around him, tight and body flushed against him.

“Though I’m not glad with your wound but I’m glad for this encounter.” Siwon spoke against his hair, stirring the tresses. He felt so warm, so inviting and so much more. “Go out with me?”

If his heart could explode into a bubbly million pieces, it would’ve now. That and he’d turn into a teenage-girl puddle of happy goo. Instead, he remained calm and breathed; he was returning the embrace with equal tight squeeze.

“Yes,” Sungmin sighed. “That’d be amazing.”

--

“I knew something was going on with you two! So obvious like Donghae’s interest with monkeys and Hyukjae's!” Heechul exasperated, throwing his hands up. Donghae flushed up, stuttering to defend himself but Heechul was already retreating back to his classroom.

“You know him, Siwon?” Sungmin asked, looking quite surprised.

“Yeah, well, he was kinda was the one who led me to you? Right after I saw you during the ceremony, he came up to me, teased me like no tomorrow and the rest was history. I swear he did that because he was bored. Upperclassmen toying the under ones, really.”

“I’m his co-upperclassman and I still get toyed by him.”

“Both a sad and happy thing then.”

Sungmin couldn’t agree more.
