Maybe, but what I liked about Pine this time was that I thought he seemed more like Shatner. Especially the way he could be sort of quietly amused at things.
I liked Kirk's character arc (for the most part), and do like that I think they fairly subtly worked in Kirk's conscience and conflict that was rarely seen in the movies but was seen all the time in the original teleplays.
I don't think I managed to perceive his arc. Though I don't necessarily think he needed to have one. The conflict about whether to use the torpedoes was good though, on the other hand, I don't think the original Kirk would've had to have had Spock point out for him it was an unusual order coming from the admiral.
Actually most of the main cast got reasonable moments of enjoyable character expansion
