From my recollection of the movie, the reveal is that the jolly, jovial, and gregarious Italian did in fact commit the crime he was in prison for - killing his adulterous wife. Why the woman he ends up with is overjoyed by this and cooing over him is as mysterious to me as the other characters seem to find it.
Ah, it's possible I misunderstood what he was saying. I thought he was saying he was caught cheating at cards and that his accuser was throwing things at him so he threw something back and somehow killed the guy with the first throw. Which sounded to me more life self defence--I didn't think he deserved imprisonment based on that. He talks about it in this clip;
