I tend to like it when the Doctor is being all happy at the death of the Daleks because it's not like the Daleks are portrayed as anything but monsters throughout the series. If the Daleks are ever depicted as capable of anything but being intergalactic bullies out to destroy everything, then a grim sadness might be warranted.

I find the alternative a bit sketchy. I HATE Torchwood for many reasons, but one of the big ones was how RTD would depict a murderer who is completely unrepentant and then asks the audience to feel bad when the murderer dies. It's disingenuous. If you want to us to feel bad at the death of a murderer, give him some qualities that suggest repentance or decency. The Wire does it quite brilliantly. RTD has shown himself incapable of subtlety.

One could say the Dalek in the ninth Doctor episode "Dalek" only becomes more complicated because of human DNA being introduced, but we could also say that the Daleks in Genesis of the Daleks and indeed in their first serial are shown to be creatures who were once capable of feeling the whole range of emotions. But putting aside whether or not the Daleks or anyone deserves to die, one of the things that makes the Doctor so distinct from most modern heroes to me is that he doesn't relish killing so much, even people who deserve it. Though another thing I liked about the Doctor is that he doesn't normally kill people out of a sense of moral righteousness but in the interest of saving as many lives as possible. This is what made the Daleks labelling him the "predator" so funny to me--it's like they're projecting.

That's true. And I do love that Dalek from Dalek. I remember that Tenant had a story in which the Daleks tried to evolve into less horrible creatures but I only saw it once and I remember most people hate that one.

I'm starting to think they're setting up Rory and Amy to raise River's baby as their own.

Could be. Since the Ponds seem to already go home regularly, it sounds like they need a really good reason for the Doctor to stop popping in and I don't see how they can do anything short of killing them. But yes, that could be a good route.
