Hi there - Like you (& probably other readers of the scroll version) I searched in vain for "Roy" Dean, then found a very useful Wikipedia entry on singing cowboys which referenced Eddie Dean. And then - & only then - realised that in fact Roy has been amended to Eddie in the non-scroll version of "Road". I wonder, however, whether Kerouac was not conflating Eddie Dean with the bigger singing cowboy star Roy Rogers, as they appeared together in at least one movie, "The Westward Trail" (but I haven't traced the horse, Bloop - Rogers' horse was of course "Trigger") Ironically, while the publishers back in the 1950s were obsessively concerned with disguising the real names of the persona in the scroll version, in the case of Dean they apparently restored his genuine name.

I think you're right, I think it's a conflation of Eddie Dean with Roy Rogers. I suspect Bloop is totally made up: the name sounds vaguely like scat to me, a sound which had such a profound influence on Kerouac's poetry. I suspect "Roy Dean" and "Bloop" may have been a sort of jazz riff on cowboy serials.
