This was my first Hamlet- and I still love it- even though Olivier is too old for the role and the text is pared to the bone. As you say, it looks wonderful. Considered simply as a movie I think it's Olivier's best work as a director.

I'm always amazed at how young Gertrude is.

You could be right that it is his best, though I really like his Henry V.
