I struggle with Scott. I read some of his novels as a kid- before I had developed a taste of my own and was being guided by what my elders considered to be "classic"- but since I grew up I've found him all but unreadable. His colourless heroes and heroines make me want to throw things at him.

And he's so long-winded. If what he's saying is interesting that's fine, but if it's not it's awfully tiresome. I find he's at his most convincing when he lets rip with the Scots dialect.

I do like the dialect. I'm glad writers were doing that before recorded sound.
