Forgive my intrusion if you already know this, but its my understanding that TMWWBK was a long-gestating project of Huston's. He originally planned to make it with Gable and Bogart but couldn't get the backing- and then a generation passed...
No apologies necessary but I did read about that on Wikipedia. As much as I love Gable and Bogart, Connery and Caine are far better suited to the role. According to Wikipedia, they were recommended to Huston by Paul Newman who was the one who told him he really ought to get British actors for the parts. Which was a good idea though I do kind of like Huston as Gandalf.
