I love how this recreates the nostalgia and faith that we see in Riggins and Street in the FNL pilot (that bonfire scene will always be my favorite), and improves it with a J2 twist.
One of the things I love best about FNL is its characterization of relationships, and even though I kind of hated Jason, I always felt like his friendship with Riggins was just phenomenal, even when it all went really downhill for a while. I'm not totally sure what I intended with this (there are some doses of that along with Matt in this last season) but I think the show does such an amazing job. And I grew up in a community just like Dillon, so it's particularly close to my heart.
I completely agree about Jason. Alone he's not really a compelling character for me, but the dynamic of that friendship was always so powerful. I do see shades of Matt in there.
