Why you maybe SHOULD believe in God (And why I don't at the moment)

Feeling purposeless? Feeling uninspired? Feeling disconnected from something greater than you and your own problems?

*NEWS FLASH* Science would rather have you push a pill down your throat than believe in God! That way, you will be numbed to an extent that you can feel God even less. That's right folks, Science is akin to just such a pill---it wants ( Read more... )

You raise some very interesting points... you're basically constructing a scenario in which positive beliefs and doctrines arise from the belief in a higher entity - irrespective of any merit of truth in the latter assertion.
If, however, the belief in a higher power can not only instill beneficial beliefs in members of society, but also, equally negative and oppressive behaviors - an example would be the associated intolerance with pentecostalism and fundamentalism - then why should we depend on such a belief as precedent for others? Why not trash this unnecessary belief in god, which merely functions as a double-edged "middle man," in pursuit of a more favorable system? One which does not include the corresponding, negative beliefs?

Good point, P! However, belief in god is not the enemy. There are plenty of people out there who believe in God and still remain respectful, tolerant, unoppressive, loving people. If we approached every social issue via anarchy we would not have a society. What's more, the very notion that we can replace a system of religion is statistically improbable. Religion is not the enemy, god is not the enemy, beliefs are not the enemy. Unchallenged, isolated beliefs that lead to harm upon others are the enemy. I'd say the religious are actualy meeting an oppressive battery from science---we just don't see it or feel it because we're on the other side of the fence. It is the job of science to challenge beliefs, but not state them for us or make war with them, especially when science is so often over-confident in itself.

one truth about religion is its need to look into the inner self, of you in relation to the deity, and by forcing people to question the heart and pursue something beyond the physical may make people more apt to say not fucking turn me down on a date
