Im not sure so feel free to ignor the rest of this comment :P
but I think the first one (say it again with a different time construct, ie two weeks ago the flush stopped working, rendering it useless ...) and its where you naturally want to take a breath, but im ot sure how much of a technical measurement breathing is in punctuation :P

Yeah, that's how I first wrote it and how I have it now. I'm pretty sure that's right, but Terri has made me so paranoid about my punctuation I'm questioning every other sentence!!
