It wasn't often that they could sit like this. Sure, the threat of war was no longer looming, and both Harry and Draco had managed to come to terms with their past, and had decided to look ahead to the future ... together.
It had started with tentative words of thanks. Draco had thanked Harry for saving his life - twice. Harry had thanked Draco for sparing his - twice. Harry had thanked Narcissa for keeping his secret. Narcissa had thanked Harry for returning her son. Harry had thanked them both publicly in his sworn testimony. They had thanked him privately over dinner.
It was to be the first of many dinners Harry would have at the Manor, and the most awkward, since he kept recalling the only time he'd been there before. The only saving grace was Lucius's absence. It had taken months to get the recurring images out of his mind, but as time passed, they were replaced with new scenes, new memories.
Once the war had ended, Harry and Draco - without threats looming, sides to choose, lines to draw, loyalties to work out - were looked upon as leaders of their houses when school had resumed. They had the opportunity to carry on the house rivalries of their past, or move ahead into a more cooperative future. Tired of it all, they chose the impossible. After all, they had managed to get past their own animosity, why couldn't their houses?
It was easier said than done, they realized, and they'd found themselves working tirelessly to wipe out stereotypes, but it was certainly an uphill battle. After one particularly tiring day, Harry had led Draco down to the lake for some private, quiet time. Sitting down on the grass, Harry captured Draco's hand and drew him down to sit in front of him, lean back into his embrace, and relax.
And that was how their friends found them hours later.
