Draco and Harry had arrived a little early at the Manor for dinner, which thrilled Narcissa. They both knew what had almost happened when they had been interrupted by the carollers (Harry had discouraged Draco from showing the children what Don we now our gay apparel could be interpreted as), and had decided that perhaps it would be a good idea just to get on with their plans for dinner, rather than risk being late.

The meal was delicious, and Harry particularly enjoyed the Christmas crackers. Unsure whether or not a high-brow pureblood family such as the Malfoys would have such novelty items, he had brought some along with him. Narcissa had not, in fact, planned on having any, but did seem to enjoy them. She even wore the paper hat that it came with, though she did change the colour from Hufflepuff yellow to Slytherin green before putting it on.

After dinner, they retired to the sitting room for some tea and to exchange small gifts. Narcissa and Draco would exchange their main ones the next day, but they'd decided on one gift each to give to each other while Harry was there. Harry had given Draco a book on potions, and Narcissa a book by her favourite author. He had also brought over a bottle of her favourite wine as a hostess gift, which she had been very pleased with. Harry was thankful that Draco had helped him choose both gifts.

Draco had given Harry a book on Quidditch techniques, and had given his mother a journal. Narcissa gave Draco a potions kit, which they all agreed went well with the book Harry had given him, and she'd given Harry a copy of Hogwarts: A History. Draco had apparently told her that Hogwarts was the first place he ever remembered feeling like home, so she thought it was appropriate. He was somewhat amused by the thought of Hermione and Ron's reactions to this, and thanked her for her kindness.

When she asked what the boys had bought for each other, Harry and Draco exchanged looks that said it was okay to share. They told her about their gifts, and Harry was sure there were tears in her eyes when Draco described his painting.

At about nine o'clock, Narcissa excused herself. She needed to prepare for tomorrow, but Harry suspected she was just giving them some time alone. She remained an enigma to Harry, but he was pleased to realize that he liked Narcissa more as each day passed. As she was leaving the room, she turned to him.

"May I have a word with you, Harry?" she asked. "Privately?"

Harry looked at Draco who simply shrugged. "I'll give you two a minute," he said and left.

"Yes?" Harry asked.

"I wanted to thank you."

Harry was confused. "You've already thanked me. It was my pleasure. Besides, I should be thanking you for dinner."

"No, Harry, I'm thanking you as a mother. What you did for Draco … well, I can't begin to tell you what that means to me. To him as well, if I'm not mistaken."

"It was nothing," Harry assured her.

"It was not nothing. It was a piece of his past that he thought had been lost forever, and you brought it back for him. That was a wonderful thing you did, and you should know that." She looked him in the eyes with such sincere gratitude that Harry was taken aback. Squeezing his shoulder, she added, "Thank you for loving my son." And then she left.

Harry was … well, there was no other word for it … he was gobsmacked. When Draco returned, he saw the stunned look on Harry's face and asked, "Are you okay?"

Harry grinned sheepishly. "Better than okay, I think," he replied. "Your mother just thanked me for loving you."

Draco rolled his eyes, but couldn't hide the blush that appeared on his cheeks. "Oh, honestly!" he huffed exasperatedly. "She's too emotional for her own good these days, that woman!"

Harry took Draco in his arms. "I do, you know," he said, pressing a tender kiss upon Draco's lips. "Love you, I mean."

Draco's responding smile lit up the room. "Do you think we could go back to your place and finish what we started earlier?"

"Definitely," Harry replied.
