Book Review: The Culture of Ancient Egypt

I recently finished reading "The Culture of Ancient Egypt" by John A. Wilson.

This book concerned me at first, due to it's age. I'm always hesitant to pick up books that are more than about 30 years old, and this book was published in the 50's. However, that being said, the author of this book has a very balanced and un-biased look at AE, and offers ( Read more... )

"And it's really interesting to see how the "unchanging religion and culture" of AE actually did change from era to era."

This just reminds me of my own particular annoyance with many Kemetic groups, who feel the Ptolemaic times were so "different", yet without really having any basis other than "foreign ruler". Egypt changed quite a bit between eras, and I don't think anymore than between the New Kingdom and Ptolemy. Plus theres the fact that by ignoring that particular era, you miss out on a LOT of stuff that I think would be very valuable to a modern worshipper, and yet is ignored because it isn't "pure" enough.

Er.. sorry for going on a tangent. My real reason for posting was I think because we haven't gotten "very far" in finding more about the Egyptian religion is that a lot of the newer stuff I've found is in a language other than English, thus we have to wait for people to translate things (or you have to go out there and do it yourself).

I would agree. It makes me sad that eventually I'll have to find a way to translate the German and French books that are out there. *sigh* hopefully by the time that happens, google translate will be able to help me more XD

The tangent is fine. I think people get too worked up over what is "correct" and what isn't. Truth is, we don't really know, and IMO it isn't really the point. But that's me.
