Admiral Albert "Al" Calavechhi is the secondary protagonist from Quantum Leap, who shows up in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear, and guides him through each episode, trying to find the solution to the problem Sam must solve in order to Leap. Despite the massive crush I had on Sam Beckett as a child, Al holds more interest for me as an adult, because there's clearly much more to the character than we ever see developed or even deeply referenced on screen. From comments dropped throughout the series, Al:

Had parents who had a rocky relationship, culminating in his mother abandoning the family
Had one sister, Trudy, who was mentally disabled and died while in an institution.
Ran away as a teen, and joined the Navy
Attended a naval/military academy
Attended MIT, probably taking advantage of the G.I. Bill
