Supernatural? And yeah, some people need to read up on cars. :/

Supernatural. I've been kind of obsessing for the last little...year. I mean, I don't know a whole lot about cars either, but how hard is it to google 'features 1967 Chevy Impala sedan'?

Not watching the show, but I've found out enough about Dean's(?) obsession with his car through fanficrants. XP

Yeah, I really can't blame him for the obsession, though I've no doubt lots of people write it WRONG (I tend to go to rec lists of people I trust for my fic, thus filtering much drek). I sort of love the Impala more than I should myself.

...Seat belt, at least? 1967 was the first year the Impala did include a shoulder belt as well as a lap. And those did at least somewhat well at keeping people from doing a faceplant into anything.

I lack enough clue about Supernatural to guess if Dean wears his. :)

Seatbelts, yeah, and they will save you from, say, flying through the windshield and they do reduce the chance of head injuries significantly. But you still move forward damn fast in a collision - that bit about a seat back is based on personal experience - and I'm guessing they're not 100% effective at it on their own, or airbags wouldn't have been implemented in the first place.

Airbags still won't go off if they're not there, though. :)

I'm not sure if Dean does wear a seatbelt. Probably depends on what's chasing him.

Yeah, but I've been in a collision where the airbag deployed and -- thanks to some combination of seatbelt and arm position -- I didn't hit it at all. Which is a rather good thing considering I'm in the size range where airbags can be lethal. :/

Airbags were originally developed -- and marketed -- for people not wearing their seatbelts, though we certainly don't hear about them that way now. But even in the 90s there were apparently a lot of people driving around without. I remember seatbelt traps being a moneymaker for the police. :)

Wikipedia notes that the 1967 Impala at least has a "collapsible" steering column -- if I understand correctly, this was to solve one of the more gruesome old-car collision problems. Older cars' steering columns would punch through the steering wheel and spear the drivers through the chest. Kinda like being stabbed with a crowbar. Bet you won't see that in fanfic.

Even if you did, it would probably involve sex, in a wildly improbable short timeframe after the incident. Sucking chest wound...mmm, sexy! *eyeroll*

There are after market airbags that can be retrofitted to older cars, but they're only for late 80's cars onward. You can't retrofit them to vintage vehicles.

Here's a question - does the car have the original steering wheel in it? Big empty spindle-like thing? Because they can't conceal an airbag.

Yeah, it does - well, at least *an* original 1967 steering wheel, as I said, it's been rebuilt. I thought of that after I posted: 'the steering wheel isn't big enough to contain an airbag'.
