Making Plans
“Shane seemed a little distracted tonight,” Adam commented as he stepped back in from the hallway.
Tommy paused in gathering plates from the table to look quizzically at his partner. “You think?”
“Yeah,” Adam responded, automatically moving to take the plates with a kiss. Tommy moved them out of reach.
“You cooked, I’ll clean,” he chided gently, “relax.”
Settling into the chair recently vacated by the red wind ninja, Adam nodded and held out his glass when Rocky proffered the pitcher of water he had just finished with. Good company and good conversation, the perfect way to end the evening. He wondered why they didn’t do this more often.
“You know, I agree,” Jason commented from his end of the table, “Shane wasn’t himself tonight. I wonder if he’s okay.”
“He wasn’t talking much with Hunter,” Adam offered, “you think they’ve had another fight?”
Rocky shook his head. “They came together,” he pointed out, “they don’t do that when they’re fighting.” He paused a moment, a thoughtful frown creasing his brow. “And if they were, Hunter seemed completely oblivious to it.”
“No different to usual then,” Adam threw in.
“What do you mean?” Rocky asked, looking confused.
“Just that there’s a lot Hunter doesn’t seem to realize when it comes to Shane.” Adam answered, with a significant look at his friend.
“Wait, are suggesting that Shane’s...?” Jason asked, returning the look.
“We know that!” Rocky interjected amusedly. “Jase, you were sitting three feet away from him when he came out at Kat’s wedding last year.”
“I was?”
“Yeah; but then, you missed a lot that day anyway. Aisha was looking pretty good in that bridesmaid’s outfit,” Rocky said with a conspiratal wink.
“She was; so was Kim, for that matter.”
“Yeah, but Rocky didn’t propose to Kim that night,” Adam couldn’t help adding.
Perhaps sensing that the pair was in one of their teasing moods, Jason wisely chose to redirect their attention back to the previous subject. “So, if we apparently already knew Shane was gay what were you talking about?”
“Haven’t you noticed that Shane acts a certain way only when Hunter’s around?” Adam asked, his tone suggestive.
“You think he likes Hunter?”
“Could be,” Tommy replied, coming back in from the kitchen and pulling up a chair beside Adam’s. “They’re in the dishwasher,” he responded to his partner’s questioning look, “I’ll unload before we go to bed.”
“Think Hunter likes Shane?” Rocky asked. The other men turned bemused expressions towards him. “Well, it’s a thought.”
“Do we even know if Hunter likes guys?” Jason queried.
“He doesn’t have a preference,” Adam responded, still looking at Rocky. “And we know he’s not seeing anyone…are you thinking…?”
“Why not? It’s been a while since we last pulled it off though; think you still remember how it goes?”
“I’m game if you are.”
“Should we even be in the room for this?” Tommy broke in, “Or is it something we’re going to want to deny all knowledge of later?”
“They’re all going to believe we were involved anyway,” Jason commented, “at least this way, we can see it coming. Those two need supervision.”
“We need a man on the inside,” Rocky continued, as if he hadn’t even heard the other two, “figuratively speaking. Think you could get Tori in on this?”
“I think so.”
“So, we’re all set,” Rocky concluded, pulling on his jacket. “And with that, I shall have to love you and leave you. Traffic’s gonna be tough if I leave it any later. Jason, ride?”
“If you’re going my way,” the older man confirmed. “Great dinner guys, you’ll have to come over sometime so Eesh and I can return the favor.”
“Only if Eesh is cooking,” Adam responded without missing a beat.
Whilst Tommy walked the other men to the door, Adam remained at the table, listening to the voices out in the hall for a moment, a slow smile starting to form. Then, he slipped his cell phone from his pocket and dialed a number from memory.
“Tor? Adam. It worked, they’ll be in touch.”
