Despite the wonderful Collected Works of Oscar Wilde that I own, I spent some time last night typing up these sections from Dorian Gray, so that I could paste them somewhere to the back of my bedroom door (along with Jack Keroauc, a personalized anime drawing, some writing quotes, and lioness pictures), and review the lovely prose and philosophy.

I'm in the midst of reading "Dorian Gray" right now for the very first time! You've inspired me. ;)

I love seeing Wildean posts on my friends list. They make me happy!

Did you know that the infectious and decadent book Wilde refers to is Huysmans's À Rebours? I just bought it the other day and can't wait to read it.

Yes, I did! I think I came across an article that mentioned how Wilde reportedly read it on his honeymoon...Actually, I've been printing off chapters online. ^_^ Although I can't wait to get a nicely-bound, physical copy.

I remember the first time I read that passage - the first one, about the book Dorian finds. It was like the book all of a sudden just summed itself up for me. I still feel that way about it - both fascinated and repulsed, and it really did have a heavy influence on me. I do love The Picture of Dorian Grey, but it's like loving a wild tiger - I'm never quite certain what it will do next.

Kind of an odd way to feel about a book, I suppose, but there you are. ^_^

I think its a perfectly lovely--and rare--way to feel about a book; you described the sensation well! ^_^ And you'll notice how I titled the LJ Cut? ;) "For years [I] could not free [myself] from the influence of this book"?

Actually, I suspect that I am still not freed from its influence. ^_^

Hee, my reaction to Dorian Gray has always been dual like Abby's, too. Except, maybe stronger. I'm part seduced, part disgusted. Hedonism makes me . . . squirmy, I guess, more than anything else. Or rather, that nauseous, thick feeling you get when a candle burns too smokily and thickly scented; or in the shower, if you run the water too hot, the air gets too thick to breathe ( ... )
