I'd say that I don't know consistantly enough for self striping yarn ^.~

there IS that. I think most self striping yarns are aimed at knitting socks, and probably a limited range of sock patterns will give you the expected results. Some of the directions I've seen for dyeing self-striping involve calculating out how much yarn it takes you to knit a single row in the sock pattern of your choice.... makes it tricky to do 'generically'
