I also have FB friends who I don't know. If you go to your friends page, on the left hand side you can make lists; I made a list of people who can only see my limited profile. This way I can acknowledge the connection, if tenuous, but keep my privacy. Also, I do hit ignore on some friend requests. I don't think you get a notification that says "This person rejected your friend request," so I don't feel bad about ignoring some requests. HTH!
I'm on FB, too -- so far, only one person I don't know has friended me, and that was through another friend. There was one person from high school whose invitation I have ignored, because she is probably just as difficult to deal with these days. LOL
