Solstice Serenity

Serenity came into land at St Albans. As normal, the planet was given over largely to snow and ice, even though the significant geothermal energy provided power and warmth to the inhabitants. However, at the moment, the planet was furthest from its sun, so it was particularly cold. By the time Serenity's goods had been offloaded, the snow was falling thick and fast.
One of the St Alban men approached Mal, “It'll be white-out soon. You'll never take off in this. We've got heated underground facilities big enough for all of you. Stay the night at least. It's close to Solstice; we can at least share that with you?”
Mal considered and then nodded. The crew followed him underground.

The underground facilities were extensive. Wash was impressed.
“Hey they've got everything down here!”
The man who'd led them in nodded, “Bedrooms, living space, bathrooms, greenhouses.”
Wash's ears perked up, “Bathrooms?”
Zoe smiled, “I think I might almost kill for a real bath.”
“This way, please...”
So, they went off. Kaylee and Simon followed them. Inara went for a bath alone. So did Mal and River; quite separately.

Jayne, and Book ended up on their own in a kind of bar.
“Wonder if they got any whores hereabouts?”
Book smiled, “Not exactly my area of expertise.”
Jayne grunted, “Haven't had trim in a while.”
“I haven't ever had it.”
“How d'ya stand it? Don't yer John Thomas ever stand up and say 'howdy'?”
“Yes, it does; but I've learned sublimation,” seeing the confused look on Jayne's face, he added, “Not giving in, channelling my sex urges into doing something else.”
Jayne grunted and went back to his beer. He was considering asking more questions when someone came bursting into the bar.
“Please; come quickly! Marcie's gone into labour!”
“Hey! I ain't a doctor!”
Book touched Jayne's arm, “Let's see what we can do to help. Sometimes all it takes is a gentle word. And maybe you can go fetch Simon if it looks bad.”
“Doc'll be doing disgustin' things with Kaylee. Lucky hwoon dahn, gettin' laid...”
“One step at a time, Jayne.”

So they followed to where Marcie was, in a bedroom near the bar. Marcie was almost naked, squatting and bearing down close to the carpet, on the verge of delivering.
Book carefully touched her shoulders and looked up at Jayne.
“No time for Simon. This baby's coming!”
Jayne mumbled and his face took on a look of disgust, “Aw...”

He squatted down at the business end of things, looking almost as though the woman was an unexploded bomb.
“Aw, man; there's a little head and everythin'.”
Book gestured to a nearby sink and Jayne quickly washed his hands. Marcie yelled, bore down and Jayne was fielding something pink, slippery and yelling before he had time to think. Happily, his hands were both large and sure. Jayne lifted the squalling infant onto its mother's belly. Book helped tie and cut the cord, then Marcie beamed as she lifted the baby into her arms.
“It's a boy. Hello, bao bei. What're your names, guys?”
Book hesitated, “Derrial.”
“Jayne.”
“Those names'll do just fine. Little Jayne Derrial.”
Book helped deal with the afterbirth and then settled Marcie back into bed.
He smiled gently, “We've got a real doctor on our crew. I'll get him to come and check on you and little Jayne Derrial, Marcie.”
She beamed, “Thanks!”

Jayne and Book went up to a place where they could smoke. This part of the bunker was built into the side of a hill and had thick plexi-glass windows looking out into the night. The snow had stopped for the moment and the sky was temporarily clear. Jayne lit up his cigar.
“I got me a boy with my name on him!”
“Mine too!”
There was a bright light in the sky.
Jayne gestured, “Ain't that Ariel?”
Book nodded, “Yeah. Ariel and Londinium; close together in the sky. At least, from this vantage point, at this time of year. They're making a brighter light by being closer together.”
Jayne nodded, “Seen stuff like that afore a few times.”
“They used to say that kids who were born when planets were creating extra light in the sky like that were special. I've even heard it might have been light like that on Earth-that-was which made the Wise Men search for the Christ child.”
“This ain't turning into a sermon, is it?”
“No. Maybe little Jayne Derrial is special.”
Jayne grinned around his cigar, “Of cause he is! He's got my name!”
Book laughed out loud and Jayne joined in.
