I think you'll also find that sensitive discussions are better in person until you have a better grasp on your technology of choice.

Though you may not like it much.
Even if you prove yourself different, they're worried about the crystal, that you still might blow something up if you happen to have it.
If you gave the crystal to someone who could handle it for a time until you learned how to control that power, it might help a lot.
