Thoughts about the PSDS:
I actually use one psd for ALL my icons, obviously altering depending on the icon. I don't know about other icon makers but its how I work. The only downside is I have a humongus list of layers!
The skins psd works great on dark caps, but some pictures will need more retouching than others.
Also textures are your friend. I know some people don't use textures at all, but I like using textures to enhance the natural colour of the image.
