My Top Five Heroines in the Last Year

Vicki Nelson - Blood Ties

I am pleased to say that the Vicki Nelson of the tv series does in fact live up to Victory Nelson of the Blood Books. The character takes defensive sarcasm to all new levels rivalled only maybe by Logan Echolls or Gregory House at this point. Vicki Nelson is a cop through and through regardless of her actual status with the force and will not be messed with, she backs down for no one (not even vampires) and will solve something or by god die trying! Of course her love life's in a shambles, her friends all think she's nuts, she's got these weird demonic tattoos (by accident) and she never answers her mother's phone calls but at least that makes her entertaining? Life's certainly never dull at Nelson Investigations

Kahlan Amnell - Legend of the Seeker/Sword of Truth Series

Kahlan is one of my newest favourites and sure the girl's got enough angst to fill up a Linkin Park CD or two but she's still kicking. Being a Confessor isn't easy, you've got to keep everybody at arms length just to keep them safe from possible exposure to your power not to mention that once most people get wind of said power they're ready to run for the hills anyway, it makes having friends hard. Kahlan's got so much heart and such empathy for her fellow-people that it makes it impossible for me not to like her. She carries every person she's confessed like a heavy weight on her shoulders yet she's the Mother Confessor and so must remain cold and aloof and seek only truth and part of doing that means she can't display how much each confession hurts her. She knows what she's doing when she uses her power and yet in the fight she's chosen sometimes it's a necessary evil and I think that's what makes me like her best of all. That she has the courage to keep fighting even at such great personal risk and loss. Plus my girl wields a wicked knife. ;)

Veronica Mars - Veronica Mars

What can I say about Veronica Mars that hasn't been said before - cheerleader turned private detective? You're thinking whaaat? Veronica had a hell of a sophomore year of highschool her first love dumped her without so much as a 'we're through', her best friend was killed, her father lost his job, they lost their house, all her friends turned against her, her mother left them and oh yeah she was roofied and raped at a party at the end of the year and when she reported it? The new sherriff laughed in her face. This sort of treatment would knock most people out of the game and find them at least changing schools but not Veronica. Junior year opens with a new Veronica, one who isn't going to take it anymore and she's got the short spiky hair and combat boots to prove it! She cuts down the new kid from the flag pole which he was taped to, she takes on the local biker gang, and better than all of that sleuths out who killed her best friend, why her mother really left town, and knocks those smarmy kids who treated her like crap last year down quite a few pegs all with snarky commentary. Veronica isn't out for vengeance but that doesn't mean she won't take it when it's available. Yet somehow through all this she retains her sense of humor, (a dry wry wit which had me in stitches) her relationship with her dad remains incredibly strong, and she somehow found time for romance and graduating with high honors.

Sarah Tancredi - Prison Break

My Prison Break love has waned but Sara Tancredi continues to be a kickass female! She's level headed above all else, compassionate and yet ruthless when she needs to be. She figured out what Michael was up to back in his genius days, she decoded his messages to her, came back from a drug overdose, successfully rescued herself from kidnappers, lived through the death of her father and the destruction of her whole life as she'd known it and still kept ticking. She was kidnapped and tortured and managed not only to escape but has surmounted her need for vengeance against her torturer. Oh I totally think she'll smack a bitch down if Gretchen puts a toe out of line and I love her for it but she's definitely past an eye for an eye stage. Sara right now is weathering the storm and my favorite aspect of her personality is that I totally believe she'll come through it, sure a little bit worse for the wear but she'll make it through and hopefully if luck and the producers and the network align she'll get her happy ending.

Brooke Davis - One Tree Hill

Brooke Davis is the embodiment of sass, wit and wicked charm. She's had life throw a hell of a lot her way including her parents abandoning her at the age of seventeen, her best friend and boyfriend sneaking around behind her back (and forgiving them both for it and retaining the friendships!), her mom stealing the company she fought tooth and nail to build, a physical attack at her place of business, she not only rescued her foster-daughter from said attacker but managed to kick his ass and land him in jail in later episodes and through it all has maintained her fab fashion sense. Brooke's got more class and more character at 23 than most people (*coughcoughpeytoncough*) gain over a lifetime.

And one to grow on

Marian - Robin Hood

Marian is the newest of my favourites, I'm barely five epis into the new Robin Hood series at the moment and I'm loving Marian for one main reason - she's SMART! She's gotten herself into and out of a plethora of scrapes over these last 5 epis and managed to extricate herself with grace and aplomb. She's resourceful and dynamic and a force to be reckoned with like all the rest. She takes responsibility for the people her father was put in charge of safeguarding, she makes an effort to bring them food and medicine and intervenes with the Sherriff for them whenever she can. She works within the system to change the system and is just overall completely brilliant!
