Lancelot (Season 1, Episode 5)
Noble Lancelot. Even from his first appearance, we get a taste of his character. He's willing to risk his own life to save a complete stranger from a griffin of all things. Not many people would take that chance when completely alone. He's quite something.
Well look at that. Uther does leave the castle at times. Look who's being a good king and actually going out to look at his kingdom.
"You face the most feared of all foes, the ultimate killing machine. You face me."
Full of yourself, aren't you, Arthur, sweetie?
The knight wannabes have to last one minute against Arthur. Soo... that either means Arthur's just that good or the candidates are just that suckish. Either way, Arthur certainly has his work cut out for him.
"I vowed that day that never again would I be helpless in the face of tyranny. I made sword craft my life, every waking hour since that day, I devoted to the art of combat."
Sweet, devoted Lancelot. Arthur claimed that knights need to have "courage, fortitude, and discipline." Seems to me that you'll never find a better fit than Lancelot.
This is extremely awkward. Like... enormously awkward.
"We need men like you... Camelot needs knights, not just Arthur and his kind, but ordinary people like you and me."
"I'm not a knight yet, my lady."
"And I'm not a lady."
I thought that was cute. That says to me that Lancelot sees every woman as a "lady." Not literally status-wise, but he treats every woman the way a noblewoman should be treated. That's certainly a rarity in any age.
These two pictures embody Gwencelot to me. They're nothing special really. It's not like their love is some earth-shattering revelation. But they make each other happy. They bring out the best in each other. When they're together, they're in their own little world. Gwen reminds Lancelot that he doesn't need to hold everyone up on a pedestal and that it's okay to just treat people like normal people. Lancelot reminds Gwen that she's special even as a handmaiden.
Lancelot, you charmer, you. Further treating Gwen like a lady. This scene gives me warm and fuzzy feelings.
"If you wanna punish me for it, go ahead."
Who could punish that face? You don't play fair, Merlin.
Can the neckline of your shirt open any wider, Arthur? I dare you. (Not that I'd ever complain... XD)
They make funny faces while fighting. Heh. Bradley puffs up his cheeks a lot. Heh heh.
"Tell me, do you think her beautiful?"
"Yes, sire, I do."
"Yeah, I suppose she is."
Ahahahaha! Oh you boys, not even talking about the same woman.
"I don't know if you'd know your type if he were standing right next to you."
Can I smack Merlin upside the head? Seriously. MERLIN. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. AN OBLIVIOUS IDIOT. Gwen kissed him. Can she possibly make it any clearer that she likes him?
"So, c'mon, just for the sake of argument, if you had to, Arthur or Lancelot."
"But I don't have to and I never will."
Ahahaha! Haha... Ha... *sobs* This isn't funny at all, is it...? It's just heartbreaking since we know how the legend goes. Just tear my heart in two, why don't you. I DON'T LIKE THIS IRONY.
To be honest, the first time I watched this episode, I didn't even recognize the foreshadowing for what it was. That's how little I was expecting Arthur/Gwen. But since then... going back to watch it just makes me want to tear my hair out in frustration.
Oh Gwen... oh naive, unsuspecting Gwen. Little do you know that the dilemma of your lifetime will be the choice between Arthur and Lancelot. Poor, poor Gwen.
"How can you trust a man who's lied to you?"
FUCK. Suddenly, I wonder if this is foreshadowing the magic reveal. Will this be Arthur's point of view when he finds out about Merlin's magic?
The griffin must be slain with magic. I take this to mean that its coat is impenetrable if not using magic. Okay. So aim for its VERY VULNERABLE AND FREQUENTLY OPEN MOUTH.
Gaius: Griffin must be killed with magic.
Uther: NO YOU'RE WRONG ARTHUR GO KILL IT WITHOUT MAGIC.
Uther, it's okay to listen to other people. I promise that won't kill you. Why are you putting your only son at risk? Sigh. I just praised Uther's judgment last episode. Although I guess the situation's a bit different... this time the kingdom is actually in danger, rather than a mere servant. Still, this is what knights are for, Uther.
"You don't sound like knight, you don't even look like a knight!"
"I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry too, because Lancelot you fight like a knight."
This little exchange never fails to make me squee. I love the way Arthur acknowledges Lancelot's skill. And the way Arthur sounds so defeated when he tells Lancelot that he fights like a knight. Clearly, Arthur would love to make Lancelot a knight, and it's the first time he realizes that not all of his father's laws are right. It's quite monumental moment, really.
"Lancelot, I don't believe I've ever met your like before."
*nods* Yup, and you never will again, Gwen.
Merlin's practically shouting the spell while Lancelot passes. Yes, Merlin, of course Lancelot figured out you're a sorcerer. And, you know, the glowing, blue, pulsating light that looks VERY VERY MAGICAL appearing on his lance might've tipped him off. Just a little. Maybe.
"I see you feel strongly about this."
Uther's face here gives me pause. Is that... fear? Maybe I've been reading too much fanfiction, but his face makes me wonder if Uther fears the power Arthur has. He seems... wary about pushing Arthur too far.
"Maybe one day fate shall grant me another chance to prove myself a worthy knight of Camelot."
"But Lancelot, you've already proved that to us."
"But I must prove it to myself."
Further proof for Lancelot's inherently good character.
Have an adorable Merlin face before you go. XD
