There's an emptiness to her gaze these days, that is unnerving to say the least. Now he can hardly coax out a nod of acknowledgement, much less a smile, a few words, the usual pleasantries they used to exchange in the few months following the accident.
There's a hollow in his heart these days, that he can no longer ignore. At first he would sit and read to her - self-help books, biographies, histories, even children's pop up books because, hey, at least he could do voice impersonations for fun. But there's no joy in it anymore. She doesn't laugh with him, no matter how ridiculous his performance. It seems she can't laugh at all.
These days, it's just the two of them. Visitors started coming less and less frequently, then stopped coming altogether. Times have changed, but Seohyun remains the same. As Yonghwa sits watching her dead eyes stare off into space, he wonders, not for the first time, "God... Why her? Why not me?"
But there's no remorse, no guilt - time has washed all of that way. The thought derives from envy. If he goes first, she wouldn't even notice. If she goes first, he would truly be alone.
