“There are monsters out there.”
Taemin’s face is frightfully somber to be that of a five year old and splotched with star-shaped patches of light. Even though he’s older, Kibum believes him, peeks between two pillows. Taemin’s nightlight sits between them spinning silently, and for the tiniest moment Kibum thinks he hears something. He seizes up with fear only to realize it’s the sound of himself breathing.
Fast forward and he’s maybe a little bit of everything he never wanted to be. He’s brazen when he wants to be anything but, loud when the silence threatens to swallow him whole; the mechanics of his mouth go all wrong sometimes, cranking open even further when he wishes it were wired shut. He wants to rewire his vocal cords and his brains, and he doesn’t know when he got like this.
Some nights, Taemin steals the bedding from around the dorm.
“Hiding from monsters, Taeminnie?” Kibum asks, but he climbs in anyway. It’s cramped and humid and decidedly uncomfortable, but Kibum sits and he listens. Hears his heart beat in an otherwise hollow chest. The sound falls strange and awkward on his ears, and maybe the real monsters aren’t outside after all.
