Do what you want, his mother says, when he tells her he’s going to an audition for a Korean entertainment company. He wants to hesitate but can’t- not when he has this feeling in his gut, not when she’s laughing and tells him to get going.
Do what you think is right, his mother says, when he tells her did it, he got accepted- he might be going for real. He’s ready to think this is the right thing to do, so he listens; he leaves. He boards his plane, Beijing to Seoul, and ignores the way his stomach flutters uncomfortably.
Do you think you can keep going like this? the doctor says, when he finally visits one. It’s seven years later and he’s doubled-over, trying to disappear into his hoodie in this hard-edged corner of a waiting room because he knows he shouldn’t be here. He should be in a recording booth but this gut feeling isn’t just a feeling anymore; it’s a pain, a sore- an ulcer on his stomach, a blister on his heart.
Do you think it’s okay that you’ve left? they say. Do you think it’s right-
“Yes,” he says. He’s still trying to believe.
