Heechul once told Yunho, "Love is a business practiced by fools."
"What makes you say that?" Yunho had asked, twisting from his side onto his back to properly address him. Or as properly as he could, considering his head was currently resting on Heechul's lap.
Heechul had smiled and patted his cheek lightly before answering. "Just thinking about how much I hate sappy love songs."
They were watching "The Little Mermaid" and Ariel was singing about a whole new world. Yunho had thought he understood. Turning his attention back to the movie, he couldn't have realized that it was every time Heechul looked at him that he saw the truth in his own words.
---
Yunho puts himself at risk on a regular basis. He is too kind, too trusting. Yunho loves with all his heart and it frustrates Heechul to no end. To him, love is a treasure to be protected, the heart a prize to be guarded. He trusts his to a select few, but Yunho is quick to give his away.
Heechul doesn't - can't - understand this. He's seen Yunho's heart too often damaged on account of this generosity.
"She broke up with me," Yunho had told Heechul, looking dejected and lost when he came home early from what was supposed to be a date.
"Tch, she's an idiot. Come on, you can take me to that movie. I've been meaning to see it."
Neither of them had much to say about the film afterwards. Yunho had spent it missing Sooyun and Heechul had spent it cursing her for not being there in his place.
Three months later, Yunho suggested introducing Heechul to his next girlfriend. "I want your approval."
Heechul put on his prettiest floral dress shirt and let his hair down. She didn't last a month, but Yunho was much less remorseful over their break-up.
---
When Yunho confesses to Heechul, with an impulsive kiss in the stairwell brought on by one or five drinks too many, Heechul shoves him away and barks at him to "get your head together." Yunho follows him passively the rest of the way and promptly falls asleep as soon as he's found the couch.
Heechul has more difficulty sleeping. He spends the rest of the night tasting Yunho's breath on his tongue and recalling the feel of Yunho's hand on his back, the warmth of Yunho's body flush against his own.
They meet in the kitchen come morning and he starts to say, "Hey, look..."
But Yunho cuts him off with an apology and a frantic, "I didn't mean it." Heechul meets it with stone cold silence.
Yunho fidgets, then adds, "It was stupid."
With a snort, Heechul shoves the glass of milk he's prepared for him into his hands. "You're more of an idiot than I'd thought," he replies, taking advantage of Yunho's momentary confusion to drag him in for a sloppy, open-mouthed kiss. Discarding his old motto, Heechul takes a stupid risk.
He doesn't regret it.
