From where they sat, the sun appeared to be setting on the other side of the world. The city stretched before them and disappeared into a hazy sea of orange and gold. The car rumbled to a calm stop as Hana turned and removed the keys. Around them, the parking garage was deserted. At this time of the night, it was almost romantic. The necklace had grown warm in Jieun's hand, but she held it tighter still.
"She's on to us, you know," Hana said, but she was grinning at Jieun in the rearview mirror.
Jieun smiled back and waved the heavy necklace before her eyes. "Doesn't matter. Hyosung's the one who shot the cop. There's only so much she can do on the run."
With that in mind, perhaps giving Hyosung the diamond was a mistake. The night's events felt more and more like a dream as the hours dragged by. In the end the diamond was as inconsequential as Hyosung's ire. The prize on Hyosung's head was worth at least ten such weighty jewels. Jieun held the necklace to her chest and admired the way it glittered against her skin. She deserved a bonus now and then, right?
