The couch is white leather and the rug is black animal hide. Equipment, artwork, and furniture swallow up every available inch of the room. A petite glass table brims with trophies, and cobwebs knit together autographed memorabilia and performers’ outfits hanging from the walls. The excess stuns her.
“Is this where-”
“Yes,” the woman says. “He’ll be with you shortly. Would you like some water?”
Jooyi folds her hands carefully behind her back. “No,” she says. “No, thank you. I’m fine.” The secretary closes the door behind her, revealing a hanging scroll that bounces against the door. It depicts a heart skewered by three swords. Jooyi finds the baroque clutter oddly reassuring; she didn’t come here for empty promises. The deliberate selection of this room is a guarantee for her. She picks her way to the unadorned couch, but hesitates to sit. It is the only object free from dust.
