Ok, I have been trying for over a week to identify this fic with no success. I am not even sure I have the right fandom. All I can remember is Blair (?) telling Jim (?) that when he was a child he used to "go away" in his mind when things got to stressful. I'm sorry I'm not going to be any help, and I've got my fingers crossed somebody will remember it for you, but I can remember something very like it, and definitely a Sentinel fanfic, and online. I've a feeling it was a gen story.
Really sorry I can't remember anything more, in spite of letting my brain percolate all day, but at least you know somebody else has seen it too!
