Things I can remember is that at some point near the beginning of the story, a warrant is issued for Jim's arrest and it is leaked to the press but the sort of sneak him out the back way and put him in a cell alone. Maybe Secrets by Jael Lyn? It definitely has a great lawyer defending Jim.
