The whole gay marriage malarky

We're currently having the old Gay marriage debate in Ireland. An argument so dumb I rarely bother expressing my opinion on it. But heres my two cents anyway.

Im sick to death of people talking about the legalization of gay marriage somehow redefining an ancient definition of marriage. People like this could use a history lesson amongst other things ( Read more... )

Well said!

And "An argument so cretinous they deserve to be mocked in the streets while pelted with used odor eaters" - brilliant! When I become Imperial Governor of Earth, that shall indeed be the fate of all who make cretinous arguments.

Ms Borgias once had a conversation on a plane with someone who claimed that gay marriage was "un-natural". She pointed out that flying through the sky in a metal tube at 400mph isn't exactly common in the animal kingdom either... :)

Personally, I kind of like the idea of couples (or groups), regardless of gender, marrying for compatibility, stability, and mutual financial security, while still being free for both to have whatever sexual relationships they like. We should move to defining lineage through the female line, instead of the male, too. It's very hard to fake who the mother is when a baby is born. A lot of the misogyny of the last few thousand years comes from the idea that lineage depends on paternity, and hence women are property.

Excellent points well put!

Ireland, along with other countries, also needs to acknowledge that gay couples make good parents, and to let them adopt kids if they want to do so too.

It's all coming back to the Catholic Church, yet again. Such a great track record of looking after children...

If you didn't know (hard not to since the assholes here aren't camera shy) we are having this same debate here in America. My state, Maryland, just passed a bill legalizing same-sex unions, signed into law by our Catholic governor, Martin O'Malley... despite all the freaking pressure put on him by Baltimore's Archbishop O'Brien, which I thought was pretty amazing and possibly the only thing I now like about Martin O'Malley.

We are waiting to see what happens though, since the bill is up for a referendum vote this November. I really hope that it doesn't get shot down. It's ridiculous that this is even an issue.

At least your country isn't going nutters over a fast food joint being anti-Gay. I'm pretty sure I've seen it all in ridiculousness now.
