Tomorrow I have to return to Stratford and my work on Coriolanus, that most political of Shakespeare's plays. Others than I have noticed that Davies' season finales always incorporate the companion(s) saving the day instead of the Doctor.

Yes - and that's being developed further. In Planet of the Ood the Doctor did nothing directly to resolve the situation; he was at most an enabler. And in WoM he wasn't just helpless - his presence was malign when he succumbed to the urge to influence events.
