We waved DD off at an unearthly hour yesterday morning onto a flight to Copenhagen. She's going to an immersive Danish language course and will be gone for three weeks. It's a big step - to go abroad alone for that length of time, living in a communal setting with people you've never met before, and I don't think I would have had the courage to do

IKR?? I am constantly CONSTANTLY holding up these places as paragons of awesome in just about EVERYTHING. It's why I laugh when Americans say socialism doesn't work.

My mum is ecstatic about Andy Murray, we are all so stoked he's a Scot and he won!

And a first! WOW, that's fabulous, he must be amazing to get that without 4 of 6 exams!!

Did you hear about Alex Salmond (First Minister of Scotland)? He sneaked in a blooming great Scottish flag in his wife's handbag (big flags are banned in the Centre Court crowd) and waved it at the great moment right behind Cameron's head. Of course he denies it was a political statement....

Oh, my, lots of good news for you!

I went abroad when I was 20. People don't realize how big a thing culture shock can be, even from one English-speaking country to another. In those days our "social media" were Airletters, those tissue-thin blue fold-over paper envelopes you wrote on both sides of, in which enclosures were forbidden. International calls were 50p a minute and the Internet simply wasn't there.

It'll be much easier for your daughter, and the people will be much more welcoming. It's a wonderful thing to be able to do.

Congratulations to your son! I remember when he was having such troubles with his health: what a wonderful change! How very well he's done!
