My thoughts on the current state of Doctor Who (includes one slightly spoilery image from Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS:

There is an exchange between Sammy and her boyfriend which should perhaps be hung on every show-runner's wall: 'You remember, it was when I was in a wheelchair and you were an alcoholic.'

I hate to say it, but Matt Smith and Steven Moffat haven't been able to make me really CARE about either the Doctor or his companions to the extent that RTD, Chris Eccleston and David Tennant did. How many times has the universe been "reset" under SM? Three times? Four now?

That's the coward's way out of having written oneself into a corner. Press the "Big Friendly Button" and undo everything that trapped you.

And that's BS.

If nothing else, at least RTD tried to pull off a climax and/or denouement - no matter how unsatisfying it was. He didn't just push a button and pretend nothing in the past hour (or season) didn't happen ( ... )

Indeed. And that's probably due to commercial pressures, which tend to reduce every creative work to the sum of its parts. Particularly sad that the enormous pressure they seem to feel to break into America as a mainstream show has been so harmful to its quirky creativity. I would much rather have it remain a cult show Stateside and keep its edge. But here we have the big bucks talking. And that is why I always try to be even-handed when criticising show-runners, because they aren't free-agents, they are paid executives representing corporations ( ... )

The interesting thing about The Wedding of RS is that River does everything people hated Rose for allegedly doing - she says, "I love you so much I don't care if the universe collapses, there is no way I'm gonna kill you." What pure, Hollywood gold! And the fans adored it. The same fans that called Rose out for trying to get back to the Doctor and flippantly using the Dimension Cannon. I think I've just worked out the reason for the discrepancy. When a two-dimensional character says something, we just get off on it and then forget it. When a real person says something, we hit paydirt. And that was why Rose was such a threat to reset-button fandom.
