Second verse, same as the first: a little bit louder and a little bit worse

*le sigh* Just when we thought it was safe to go back in the water.

Good ol' El Jay is at it again, with more journal deletions. The primary concerns this time are:

Firstly, that users known as elaboration and ponderosa121 had their accounts deleted supposedly for posting fanart featuring an adult having sex with a minor (elaboration was kicked for an erotic drawing of Harry/ ( Read more... )

Am I wrong in saying that Livejournal probably isn't the one who directly started this mess, and someone likely reported the two artists that got their accounts suspended? I think that if they were to find out if that was true, then the blame wouldn't be on Livejournal nearly as much. Of course, I seriously doubt that Livejournal would give the two artists such information (they basically said they wouldn't do that for me when I reported that troll and said someone else had reported it too- though I never really asked for that any way), but maybe they could at least confirm it.

Did you see the new "report abuse" thing? It's here, though that's not the direct one that you get when you go to the "report abuse" link at the bottom of the main LJ page.

Possibly, although it's certainly in keeping with LiveJournal's stance about the whole Strikethrough business, not to mention all the uncertainty that happened afterwards (and continues to happen). And even if someone did report those artists, LJ's reaction strikes me as very kneejerk - from reading comments by the artists on GJ, I gather that this was their first "violation," and LJ just went ahead and suspended their account anyway, telling them to basically fuck off. I'd prefer to see a three-strikes, you're out sort of rule, even though LJ is technically allowed to do whatever it wants. But if they're going to institute a one-violation-and-you're-gone thing, they should at least have the decency to say so publicly.

I did, and it really bothers me. Putting something like that right at the bottom of the page where it's so easily visible seems to invite abuse of the Report Abuse button. Like, if someone came by my journal and was squicked by Obidala, all they'd have to do was hit the Abuse button and report one of my more explicit ( ... )

Do you happen to know whether or not the entries that the fan art were posted in were friendslocked or public? Because honestly, I think friendslocking the posts with fan art or fiction (such as your Obidala fics) is the key, because it would probably be an invasion of privacy if someone were to try to report someone's friendslocked LJ entry, and I bet LJ wouldn't be able to do anything because of that ( ... )

From what I understand, LJ can go after something whether it's f-locked or not, and they don't factor into their suspensions whether the offending material was locked. It sort of makes sense in a way, because if someone had posted something truly illegal and friends-locked it, LJ would still need to be able to get access to it, and the person who reported it would still have a legitimate case. That's what I've been reading on lj_biz, anyway.

They probably don't - the only way I could see that being a problem is if I wrote a fic set in the Phantom Menace period, because Padme was 14 and Obi-Wan was 25 which would technically make her underage. I don't tend to write in that era anyway, though, and the one fic I might write that would take place during/after Episode I would be very AU, so I could raise her age to above that of consent with no issues.

But yeah, apparently friendslocking won't solve anything. >.> And I wouldn't f-lock mine, anyway, because I'm a dork and love getting them spotlighted on jedi_news. XD
