Chapter 23
The New Year was filled with many surprises including a call from Shako’s grandmother in Osaka to tell Shako to help at her friend’s daycare in Tokyo. The daycare just opened and there wasn’t enough staff at the moment. The children were only three which meant things could be quite troublesome for the two workers there. Shako and the owner of the daycare were pretty good friends. Inoue-san was a few years older than Shako and she looked up to her as a child. They played together a lot as young children, but then Inoue-san moved to Fukuoka and Shako didn’t stay in contact with her. When she heard that she moved back into Tokyo she was overjoyed.
Shako and Daiki were walking towards the daycare centre. Shako didn’t want to go alone and therefore she dragged Daiki along with her although dragging wasn’t necessary. Daiki liked kids so he didn’t mind going to help out.
“Gomen nee Daiki…having to do this on a perfectly good Saturday afternoon. Why couldn’t I just say ‘no’?” Shako sighed.
“It’s alright Shako. It’ll be fun. And you didn’t say ‘no’ because your love your grandma too much and she’s family. You said Inoue-san was also your friend. Family helps family and friends help friends nee?” he patted her shoulder.
“Hai~”

Shako and Daiki were faced with a group of children.
“Shako nee-chan and Arioka nii-chan will be taking care of you today nee?” Inoue-san introduced the pair to the group children. “Make sure you’re nice to them okay?”
“Hai~~!!” the group of 13 children replied.
The children spent most of the day drawing pictures, playing with blocks and listening to stories. Shako was helping one of the younger girls, Maiyu, draw a panda on her canvas. She was standing in front of the board sketching when she looked up and saw Daiki surrounded by a group of girls, and some boys, all intently listening to the story he was reading. Daiki had a little fanclub. He was really good with children and it made Shako laugh.
“…and they lived happily ever after. The end…..hai owari desu!* hakushu*~” All the little kids clapped, filled with glee.
“More! Read one more Daiki nii-chan! Onegai~” Risa-chan shouted out from the crowd of Arioka Daiki fans.
“One more! One more!” the kids started chanting.
“Hai, hai. We’ll read one more.” Daiki picked up the book and started reading.
Shako snapped out of her daze when she heard someone crying. Shintaro-kun was holding his head and tears were pouring from his face as he ran towards Shako.
“Shako nee-chan, Rui-kun hit me!” he said pointing towards the little boy in the corner, playing with blocks.
Shako picked up Shintaro and kissed the boo boo better. She walked over to Rui and scolded him harshly, yet kindly at the same time. When the whole problem was over, Shako walked over to a chair in the room and sat down with Shintaro in her lap. She sat with him until he stopped crying.
Shintaro jumped down from Shako’s lap and kissed Shako on the cheek.
“Arigatou Shako nee-chan!” he gave her a peace sign and skipped away. Shako put her hand on her cheek. He was so cute! Little did she know, Daiki was watching the little scene from where he was sitting, surrounded by his fan club. He knew that he shouldn’t be jealous since Shako was ALREADY his girlfriend, but he couldn’t help feeling envious as he sat there.
“Daiki nii-chan? What’s wrong?” Riki asked from the group. Daiki was so distracted by the affection Shintaro was showing to his girlfriend that he stopped reading and was blankly staring.
“Ah! Gomen!” Daiki was a little startled but immediately went back to reading after shaking his head, getting rid of the thoughts he had.

When all the children were sleeping during nap time, Daiki pulled Shako into the coat room at the daycare. As with all of Daiki’s sudden and unexpected actions, she tried to protest but was ignored and then pushed against the wall. Even though Daiki wasn’t much taller than Shako, she felt like he was hovering over her.
She was about to push Daiki away, but she felt his lips on hers. All protests died and Shako just kissed him back. When Daiki moved away, Shako asked him, “Dai-chan, what was that for?”
At first, Daiki looked like he didn’t want to answer her. The expression on his face resembled that of a young boy who knew he did something bad. Realization hit Shako. He was jealous of Shintaro-kun.
“Dai-chan, you know you can’t be jealous of a three year old…”she said knowingly.
“I…I’m not jealous.” Daiki pouted and turned away from Shako crossing his arms over his chest. For a 22 year old, Daiki was acting a lot like the three year olds that surrounded him earlier that day.
“Dai-chan… you know I’m your girlfriend and being jealous over a little boy is silly.” She said as she walked up behind Daiki and wrapped her arms around his waist, placing her chin on his shoulder.
“I know…” Daiki pout was slowly disappearing.
“Ja… with that solved…” Shako was pondering something. Daiki just turned around to look at her with a confused look. He saw Shako leaning towards him and their lips met. Shako wrapped her arms around Daiki’s neck and they just stood in the coat room kissing. Daiki opened his eyes when he heard whispering and he saw a group of children who had just woken up from their naps. All the three year olds had the same blank looks on their faces as they stared at the couple in front of them. There was even a kid picking his nose.
“Shako nee-chan…Daiki nii-chan what are you doing?” Risa piped up. “Why are you hugging? Daiki nii-chan let’s go read more stories!” she ran up to Daiki and pulled him back onto the carpet in the room, handing him a book. The Arioka Daiki fanclub squealed and followed Daiki.
A group of boys were around Shako this time. “Shako nee-chan why were you hugging and kissing Daiki nii-chan? Are you in love with Daiki nii-chan? But what about cooties?” their innocence was cute.
Shako bent down to be at eye-level with the three year old boys. “Daiki’s my boyfriend and I already got my cootie shot” she winked to them playfully, “so I can’t get cooties.” Even though Shako was lying to the kids, she felt like they should keep their innocence for a little while longer. They were only three and didn’t need their minds corrupted at such a young age.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later in the day, the two groups were put together and everyone was on the carpet singing songs. When Inoue-sensei left the room, Shintaro and Risa’s hands both shot up into the air. They had a chance to ask the questions that were bothering them all day.
“Shako nee-chan! Do you and Daiki nii-chan love each other?” Risa-chan asked. Daiki and Shako exchanged glances and gave weak smiles, blushing.
“I-I guess so. Daiki nii-chan’s my boyfriend…” This was becoming more and more awkward.
“Why were you two kissing and hugging in the cubby room?” Shintaro asked.
“Because when boys and girls love each other they kiss and hug! My mommy and daddy do that all the time!” one of the other kids in the class spoke up.
“But boys have cooties!!” Riki-chan screamed in disgust. “I don’t want to kiss or hug ANY boys!”
There was a commotion in the room as some kids were telling other that it was fine to show affection and others were screaming saying that it was gross.
Daiki stood up and tried to calm the students down, “Minna! Shizukanishite Kudasai*! Be quiet!” He sat down when the room went silent. “Now, now it’s perfectly fine for boys and girls to like each other. You see you guys were all made from love between your mommies and daddies. When mommies and daddies love each other-” Shako’s eyes widened when she realized where Daiki was going and she slapped him in the head.
“Dai-chan! You can’t tell them about that! They’re only three year olds!” Daiki rubbed his head weakly laughing.
“You didn’t have to hit me so hard…Kiss it better!” Now he was just being childish again.
“Fine then.” She kissed Daiki on the head. “Better?”
“Yes!” Daiki was grinning from ear to ear. They remembered that they were in front of a group of three year olds when they heard giggling and whispering. Shako turned bright red and Daiki just laughed.
This was going to be an interesting week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Shako and Daiki spent more and more time at the daycare, Daiki’s fanclub was growing. Shako actually had a fanclub of her own. The class was split into two as all the girls were around Daiki, and all the boys were around Shako. The leaders of these clubs? None other than Risa-chan and Shintaro-kun.
All the boys and girls admired the two adults. There was only one problem. They were together. Risa-chan was jealous of Shako because she secretly…or not so secretly, had a crush on Daiki nii-chan. It was the same for Shintaro-kun though he simply looked up to Shako; he didn’t actually love her. Shintaro-kun was interested in someone else.
Shintaro and Risa were talking secretly in the cubby room.
“So we have to break them up!” Risa declared.
“I guess so… but I don’t want to hurt Shako nee-chan. She’s so nice…” he was unsure about their plan.
“But you like her Shin-chan!” Risa-chan moved closer to Shintaro looking him in the eye, their noses almost touching.
“I g-guess so…” Shintaro turned his head away his face red.
“Shin-chan, what’s wrong? Why is your face red?” she inspected Shintaro’s face putting her hand on his forehead. “Hmm..you’re kinda warm…do you gave a fever Shin-chan? Mama does this when I have a fever.”
“N-n-no! I’m fine!” he shook her hand off and ran out of the cubby room. He ran right past Shako who was looking for the two. Shintaro didn’t even notice that his idol was standing by the door. Shako actually saw the whole thing. She was smiling at the now beet red Shintaro who was in the bathroom mirror staring at himself, slapping his cheeks to make the redness go away, and Risa who was puzzled. Shintaro liked Risa, but was too embarrassed to admit it. Shako wanted to play cupid again.

During nap time that day, Shako and Daiki were sitting down with two cups of coffee simply talking.
“Nee Dai-chan, did you see Shintaro-kun? I think he likes Risa-chan,” she whispered, giggling at how cute the innocent crush was.
“Risa-chan….you mean the self proclaimed ‘President of the Arioka Daiki fanclub’ Risa-chan?...Oh gosh she’s a handful. That girl won’t let me breathe! I think she likes me… but she’s three…She even tried to kiss me yesterday!”
Shako laughed at Daiki’s expression. He was clearly weirded out by the little fangirl.
“So you’re going to help me get Shintaro-kun to confess to her right?”
“I really wish you’d stop sticking your nose in other people’s business Shako…but I want Risa-chan to leave me alone…so I guess I’ll help you.”
“Yay!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During snack time Shako and Daiki were moving around the tables, opening containers, wiping up messes and calming down the children. Shako was standing behind Risa-chan and she called out,
“Daiki nii-chan! Can you please open my container?” she held it up in the air. Shako offered to open it.
“I can open it for you Risa-chan!” she smiled at the three year old.
“NO! I want Daiki nii-chan to open it baba*!” she turned away from Shako, protecting her container.
“BABA?! I’m only 20!” she wasn’t going to lose to the chibi. “Dai-chan~ Risa-chan called me a hag!” she pretended to cry as she ran over to Daiki. Daiki softly scolded Risa telling her to be nice with her words while Shako was smiling over Daiki’s shoulder because of her victory.
Risa-chan just pouted and stormed off.
When everyone went home that day, Shako and Daiki were cleaning up. Only Shintaro was left and as he waited for his mom. Shako was bending over a table wiping it clean when she felt a tug on her shirt. Shintaro was standing behind her looking like he wanted to ask her something.
“Shako nee-chan I need your help. Daiki nii-chan too…”
They sat down at one of the tables. Shintaro wasn’t making eye contact with either of his elders.
“What’s wrong Shintaro-kun?” Shako asked the little nervous boy.
“W-well… Risa-chan…” Before Shintaro could continue Daiki butted in.
“You like Risa-chan don’t you Shintaro-kun?” he asked kindly. Shintaro’s face turned bright red and he nodded.
“Kawaii!*” Shako exclaimed.
“D-demo…she like Daiki nii-chan. There’s no way she could like me….”
“Are you sure Shintaro-kun? I think Risa-chan likes you too. You just have to tell her.” Shako tried to encourage the timid little boy.
“B-but h-how? She’s always with her friends.”
“Don’t worry Shintaro-kun! We’ll take care of that for you!” Shako smiled at Shintaro, which made him smile as well.
“Thank you Shako nee-chan! Thank you Daiki nii-chan!” and with that, Shintaro left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, Daiki asked Risa-chan to stay afterschool and of course, because her love interest asked her to, she stayed. Risa-chan was standing in the classroom alone looking around for Daiki when she heard someone outside the classroom.
“I can’t do this!” she heard someone whine.
“Of course you can! Now go! Good luck!” it was someone else. The door opened and Shintaro was pushed through the door. He was holding a rose and was blushing furiously.
“Oh, hi Shin-chan. Have you seen Daiki nii-chan? He asked me to stay afterschool but I can’t find him.”
“A-anno….Risa-chan….” Shintaro walked up to Risa, “I-I l-like you!” he bowed and held out the rose to Risa.
“Eh? Shin-chan? You like me?” she put her finger on her chin thinking about something. “Ja… I like you too!” she said pouncing on poor little Shintaro. “Shin-chan is now my boyfriend!” she was holding onto the blushing boy like a koala holds onto a tree.
Shako and Daiki were watching from outside the classroom, laughing quietly at the pair. They were just too cute!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day was Shako and Daiki’s last day at the daycare. The Arioka Daiki Fanclub President quit her job as leader and moved onto a new fandom; her ‘boyfriend’ Shintaro.
“Shin-chan let’s go play with puzzles!” Risa-chan said pulling the boy along by the hand.
“H-hai!”
The rest of the day went similarly. Risa didn’t cling to Daiki anymore. She was now fascinated with Shintaro. She negotiated with (or more like threatened) Rui-kun to switch seats with her so she could sit next to Shintaro. She even slept next to him during nap time and held onto his hand. She didn’t leave him alone all day. It wasn’t like Shintaro cared though. He confessed and Risa-chan was his ‘girlfriend’. What man… boy could be happier?
“Aww they look so cute together!” Shako watched the pair from afar, admiring her work with Daiki next to her.
“I guess so. It looks like Shintaro-kun is Risa-chan’s puppy. But isn’t that how every couple is these days…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later that day, Hana-chan, another girl in the class came up to Shintaro to ask him to borrow his crayons.
“Shintaro-kun, can I borrow yo-” before she could finish, Risa-chan screamed.
“NO! SHIN-CHAN IS MY BOYFRIEND! YOU CAN’T HAVE HIM!” Risa-chan was wayyy too protective over Shintaro. There were tears in her eyes as she clung onto Shintaro’s arm.
“Gomen nasai Hana-chan, I left them at home.” He apologized to his classmate and patted Risa-chan on the head. “It’s alright Ri-chan, don’t cry…” he said trying to wipe away her tears. It was obvious that the relationship wasn’t one sided.
“Arigatou Shin-chan.” She snuggled up against the chibi boy and fell asleep like that. It was nap time anyway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When everyone went home, Risa and Shintaro were left to wait for Shintaro’s babysitter. Coincidently they had a play date that afternoon. When the babysitter arrived, Risa-chan walked up to Daiki (still holding Shintaro’s hand) and tugged on his shirt.
“What’s wrong Risa-chan?” Daiki bent down so he was at eye level with Risa.
“I’m quitting your fanclub Daiki nii-chan. Gomen I can’t love you anymore. I love Shin-chan now! Nee Shin-chan?” she faced Shintaro and tilted her head cutely. Shintaro blushed. “Bye bye Daiki nii-chan! Bye bye Shako obaa-chan!” they waved goodbye and walked away with their babysitter.
“OBAA-CHAN?!?” Shako screamed, “I’m going to get that little monster!”
*hai owari desu- it’s over
*hakushu- applause
*shizukanishite kudasai- please be quiet
*baba- old hag
*throughout the chapter Shako and Daiki are called nee-chan and nii-chan which mean older sister and older brother. It’s a way of showing respect to elders.
A/N- and that’s the end of the episode: ‘Daiki and Shako Visit the Kindygarteners’ (yes I said kindygarteners) I don’t know why I chose Shintaro….XD but he’s cute so that’s okay. As for Risa’s character…I was inspired by Momoka from Daa! Daa! Daa! For some odd reason the tone of her voice was running through my head as I was writing the dialogue for her. The voice really matches the character XD The fact that they call their rival girls "baba" and "old lady" is funny too XD After reading over this chapter I realized “wth happened to Inoue-san?” I guess she was out of the room a lot XD Daiki giving “the talk” to a bunch of 3 year olds was funny to imagine XD Anyway~ Comments and Criticisms are love <3
