Chapter 16
Everything was slowly going back to normal. Daiki was hanging out with Shako everyday afterschool just like before. He would occasionally disappear for about a day but every time he did, Shako would look down at the ring on her finger. She was constantly reminded about Daiki’s love for her. It was sweet.
One day, Daiki met Shako afterschool and he took her to his special place again. They were lying on the grass looking up at the sky.
“Kirei da nee…The sky’s so pretty today. It makes me feel relaxed,” Shako sighed. She looked over at Daiki who was fidgeting. “Dai-chan what’s wrong?”
“Eh? Nothing….” He continued to fidget and looked at his watch. “It’s almost time.”
“Time for what..?” Shako remembered the time when Daiki confessed to her. He said the same thing. And just like the time before, she felt herself being pulled along as Daiki dragged her to his house. They walked in through the front door and all the lights were turned off. He walked into the dark room not bothering to turn on the lights.
“Daiki…aren’t you going to-”
“SURPRISE!!! OTANJOUBI OMEDETOU!*” The lights turned on and Shako was surrounded by a crowd of people. All the people who were special to her stood before her. Her parents, Chisa and Yabu, Maki, Hiroto, Yuuto, Takaki, and her other friends from school. She looked around and suddenly felt her eyes water. Daiki was standing at her side with his arm around her waist.
“Thank you everyone” she was trying to hold back her tears.
“Don’t thank us Shako, thank Daiki! He’s the one who’s been planning this for weeks!” Chisato called out from the crowd.
“Eh? Dai-chan?” She looked at Daiki who was blushing and looking in the other direction. “Arigatou” she smiled.
The party commenced. Daiki hadn’t left Shako’s side at all. He took her over to a group of unknown faces. “Shako I want you to meet some of my closest friends. This is Yamada Ryosuke, Chinen Yuuri and Morimoto Ryuutaro.” Shako immediately recognized the Chinen. He really did look like a girl but of course she didn’t say that out loud. She also recognized Yamada and Morimoto as they were with Daiki the day she saw Satoda-san.
“Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu*.” Shako bowed to them.
“Omedetou*” they all said simultaneously.
“Thank you!” Daiki had turned around and was now taking care of some business. Yamada took Shako’s hand and kissed it.
“It’s very nice to meet you Takahashi-san. You can call me Yama-chan” He winked at her, “oh look, they’re starting to do karaoke. Let’s go watch.” Yamada put his arm around Shako’s shoulders and lead her over to the group of people singing. Shako was blushing at the sudden closeness of the boy she just met.
Daiki came back into the room and saw that his best friend had his arm around his girlfriend. If anyone had looked into Daiki’s eyes at that moment, they would have seen small fires blazing. Daiki glared at Yamada’s back and he walked over to Shako.
“Nee Shako, I have another surprise for you.” Daiki slid his arm around Shako’s waist again and lead her into another room. It was much quieter as all the commotion was in the living room.
“I want to show you something. I don’t know if you’ve already noticed but…here, give me your ring..”
Shako looked at Daiki confused but slipped the ring off her finger and handed it to Daiki who was also pulling off his ring. “Hora*”
He held both rings in front of Shako’s eyes. On the inside of her ring it said: Arioka Daiki <3 and on the inside of his ring it said: Takahashi Shako<3. Shako hadn’t realized this at all and so she was overjoyed when Daiki showed her. But did they have to leave the room? She knew exactly why they were in a different room when she felt Daiki kiss her softly on the lips. She was glad Daiki pulled her away from the party, or everyone would have seen.
The truth was, Daiki was just trying to get Shako away from Yama-chan. He and Ryosuke were best friends, yet Yama-chan had a habit of hitting on any pretty girl he saw. Daiki was never offended by his friend’s antics but that would soon change as Yama-chan was starting to hit on HIS girlfriend. Daiki had also shown Shako the engravings on her ring to prove that she was his and no one could take her from him. Normally, Daiki wasn’t possessive, but when it came to Shako, he could be pretty protective. The pair was hugging until someone opened the door.
“Nee Takahashi-san, Chisato-chan is looking for you outside” Daiki assumed that Yama-chan started flirting with Ayamoto-san too for him to be calling her by her first name. He growled quietly because they were interrupted. Shako noticed it and tapped Daiki on the nose.
“Don’t worry Dai-chan. Anyway, remember it’s a party? I would be rude to leave in the middle of it.”
“Hai~” He took Shako’s hand and lead her out of the room they were in.

The second Shako had finished talking to Chisato, Yamada came up behind her.
“Are you enjoying yourself Takahashi-san?” Shako felt Daiki’s grip around her hand tighten. She looked at Yamada, gosh, everything about him screamed “sex appeal”. Shako could understand why Daiki suddenly felt protective. She could see that Yamada was flirting with her. She wasn’t stupid.
“Hai, very much so,” she realized that she could get this guy to leave him alone. “Nee Yama-chan? Did you see the ring Dai-chan gave me? We have matching ones!” she smiled and grabbed Daiki’s hand to show off the rings. Shako and Daiki saw a surprised look flash across Yama-chan’s face and he turned his body to look around the room.
“Ah! Chinen! Ryuutaro!” Yamada walked towards his friends and started chatting with them. Daiki and Shako exchanged glances and burst out laughing.
“You noticed?! I can’t believe it! And the way you got him to leave you alone!”
“Of course I noticed! I tried not to be mean~” It took them a while to stop laughing.
“Sa…I guess we should go back to join everyone nee?” Daiki asked.
“Mou…but I don’t wanna” Shako was pouting.
“Shako, you know this party is for you. There’s no point in hiding.”
“Hai~”

The night ended as Shako cut her cake and opened her presents. She received many gifts like stuffed animals from her friends, CDs, DVDs and jewelry. All a girl could ask for. Of course, those gifts were special, but not as special as Daiki’s presents. Daiki threw her a fantastic birthday party and gave her the ring that was her most treasured item.
When everyone had left, Shako and Daiki were cuddling on the couch watching TV. Shako was playing with the ring on her finger, not paying attention to the screen in front of them. Daiki wasn’t paying attention either. He was too focused watching Shako.
“Arigatou Dai-chan, for everything. Today was so much fun. No one’s ever done anything like this for me… You see…when I was growing up, my parents used to travel a lot. They would rarely be with me on my birthday and the most I ever got was a phone call. Sometimes they’d be so busy with work that they would even forget my birthday.” She snuggled even closer to Daiki and reached up to kiss him. “Honto ni arigatou*” she whispered.
“You’re welcome Shako..” it was so quiet in the house. Even though they were alone and could be as loud as they wanted, Daiki didn’t want to break the peaceful silence. He saw Shako yawn. “Nee it’s late, I think I should take you home now.”
“Hai~” she had a long day and just wanted to go home to sleep.

When they reached Shako’s doorstep, Daiki had to practically take the key from Shako’s pocket and open the door himself. She yawned again.
“Thank you Dai-chan. Oyasumi nasai~” she kissed Daiki good night and closed the door.
A/N- ja….Shako’s birthday has passed~ which makes me think “oh crap I forgot about Daiki’s birthday!” Speaking of birthdays, it's this fic
s one month birthday XD I started writing this fic on July 2nd XD Anyway….I’m also starting to wonder “sa… how am I going to end this fic?” I received advice to kill off either Daiki or Shako (or both DX) in a car accident….but I’m too attached to my characters and Dai-chan *gets shot* to do that (plus I’m not that evil)….i’m such a fail writer..it also pained me SO much to make Yama-chan an "evil" flirt..... I'm sorry yama-chan T^T Comments and Criticisms are love <3
