Chapter 8

Shako woke up a few hours later as the sun started to set. She tried to sit up but she felt something preventing her from doing so. The teen slowly opened her eyes and she was face to face with a sleeping Daiki. She screamed. Daiki slowly opened his eyes and let go of Shako who immediately jumped off the couch and was standing, pointing at Daiki. “Ah, ohayou sleepy head. Did you know you snore AND sleep talk it? It was so annoying. ”

“What the hell Arioka Daiki! Why was I sleeping on you!? What happened? What did you do? You better not have done anything perverted you….lecher!”

“Oi! What’s with all the names? I’m not a lecher! YOU’RE the one who collapsed from a FEVER and were sleeping on ME!”

“…..” Shako still had her finger in the air, her mouth open, ready to shoot words back at the chibi on the couch. Yet nothing came out. Knowing that she lost the battle, she gave up and flopped down onto the couch beside Daiki. She realized that she was too close to him and was about to move, yet he got up first.

“I gotta go home now. Ja!” Daiki was walking to the door but stumbled. Shako giggled quietly at the fact that he fell over the smooth, flat surface of the hardwood floor. Her giggles suddenly ceased when she saw Daiki stumble again.

“Nee…Dai-chan are you okay? Don’t tell me….you caught my cold?!” Shako reached out and placed her hand on Daiki’s forehead. He was warm and was breathing heavily.

“Shako my head’s killing me and I can’t breathe,” he whispered. His lips were blue and was starting to cough dryly.

What?! He’s really sick! Ah I hope it’s not deadly..OMG what if it’s SWINE FLU?! Daiki don’t die on me!!

“Eh? I’ve gotta get you to the hospital. It’s only a block down the road. Can you walk?” Shako was trying to stay calm. He tried to stand properly, but collapsed onto the floor. “I guess not…and I can’t drive…Ah!” Shako pulled over the chair under her computer desk which had wheels. “Sit.” She commanded and not having much choice, Daiki obeyed. She pushed him out the door, into the elevator and down the street. Of course people were staring at them, but Shako didn’t care. All that mattered to her was getting her friend to a doctor.

It turned out that Daiki had pneumonia and had to stay in the hospital for a few days until he got over it.

“Arigatou! If you hadn’t brought him to the hospital, who knows what could have happen!” Daiki’s mother was thanking Shako.

“Ah iie! Daiki’s my friend. I couldn’t just leave him…” Shako replied absentmindedly as she was watching Daiki on the hospital bed.

“I have to go to call Daiki’s father to tell him everything’s fine. He couldn’t get out of the office and I bet he’s worried sick.” Arioka-san scurried away. Shako walked towards the side of Daiki’s bed and looked down at him.

“Mou Dai-chan why did you let me sleep on top of you? You would have never caught such a bad cold if you would have just woken me up,” she spoke ever so softly to the sleeping figure.

“Yeah…I could have…but if I did….you could be the one on this bed….” Daiki mumbled. He was clearly awake.

Wait…what did he just say? Was he worried about me?

Shako blushed and said something incoherent. It sounded like, “You were worried about me?”

“Of course….I was. I may be short, but I’m not indecent.” His words were quiet. Daiki reached out from under the blanket and took Shako’s hand.

“D-d-dai-chan what are you doing? Don’t tell me the medicine’s going to your head.” She was red as a tomato now. It didn’t end there. Daiki pulled Shako’s hand and placed it on his cheek.

“Your hand’s cold. It feels nice.” All she could do was stand there, praying that no one would walk in. Her pleas were ignored when the doctor and an elderly man walked into the room. The physician was escorting the man back to his room after his daily check-up.

“Ah~ young love~” the old man said.

Shako spent the next week visiting Daiki in the hospital.

“So how is the patient today?” Shako asked sitting down at Daiki’s bedside and she started peeling an apple for him.

“Feeling better, gosh it’s so boring here! All I get to do is sit here and stare at the ceiling. They won’t let me go outside,” the sick boy was starting to pout.

“Hai, hai I know it sucks, but you have to get better before you can go anywhere nee?” she reminded him.

“Hai Okaa-san~” Shako was becoming more and more comfortable around Daiki.

“Aw, cheer up Dai-chan. I’ll treat you to lunch when you get better. Okay?”

“Yay! Free lunch!” Daiki had a smile on his face now.

“Yay for you, boohoo for my wallet. Here.” She handed him a plate of sliced apples.

“Mou~ I’m too weak to move~ Feed me?” Daiki was just being lazy.

“Eh? No way! You can feed yourself!” Shako got up and left the room.

He was watching her leave and said to himself, “I guess I have to move now…..”He thought that Shako was angry with him when in fact, she was just embarrassed.

He heard a sudden pitter patter of footsteps that were becoming louder and louder. Shako came running back to his room. A head popped in through the door.

“Nee, don’t forget. We’re going out for lunch, so that means you have to get better soon!”

“So where are you taking me Shako?”

“Be patient Dai-chan. You took me to your special place, now it’s my turn.” She was leading him to a small café. “Ta-da! Isn’t it pretty?” It was a family owned café. The smell of freshly brewed coffee was swirling around the tiny place. The furniture was rustic, yet classy. There was a huge window in the front of the store which framed the snowy streets perfectly. Even though the roads were filled with people bustling around shopping for Christmas presents, it was still calming to look through the window. Shako led Daiki and they sat down at a table right in front of the window. “I love coming here. The atmosphere is calming and everyone’s so friendly.”

“So little miss, you’re back again eh? Did you bring your boyfriend with you too this time?” An older man appeared behind Shako. He had a black apron tied around his waist which covered his everyday clothes.

“Takaki-kun!” Shako whipped her head around, “No, this is my friend Arioka Daiki. And yes, I keep coming back! You know I love you too much to stay away.” Daiki’s eyes widened.

Love? She LOVES him?! EHHH?!

“Hahaha, very funny shorty. Nice to meet you Arioka-san, I’m Takaki Yuya. My family runs this place so I get sucked into working here. Anyway, what will it be today ochibi-chan?*” Takaki pulled out a notepad from his pocket and a pencil from behind his ear.

“The usual Takaki-kun. For him too.” Shako ordered for herself and for Daiki.

“Got it.” Takaki snapped the notebook shut and walked towards the kitchen.

Daiki was about to protest and ask questions when Shako stopped him. “Before you say anything, remember, I’m treating you to lunch. I want you to try their sandwiches. I know you can get sandwiches anywhere, but here…I don’t know it just tastes better. Maybe ‘cause there’s love in them.”

Their food arrives shortly. Daiki took a bite and realized that Shako was right. They were good.

“Oishii~”

“Aren’t they? Do I know how to pick a place or what?” Shako sat there satisfied.

“Nee Shako, what are you doing for Christmas?” Daiki suddenly asked.

“Eh? I don’t know…probably going back to my parent’s place to spend it with the family….Why what about you?”

“I don’t know… I might just spend it alone..”

“Eh?! ALONE?! You can’t do that Dai-chan!!! Christmas alone is so…BORING! I have an idea. Come over to my parent’s place with me for Christmas!”

A/N- you wouldn’t believe how long it took me to figure out what “the usual” was >w< Comments and criticism are love <3
