Chapter 6
As the days in the school year went by, Shako and Daiki were becoming closer and closer. During their summer break, they were working on their summer assignments once again at Shako’s house. She was starting to wonder why it was always her house and never his.
Daiki finished first as usual, and was lying on the floor by the electric fan, staring at the ceiling. Shako also finished and put away the multitude of textbooks. She brought a tray of iced tea to the table.
“Nee Shako, what do you want to do this summer now that we’ve gotten all of our work out of the way?” Daiki asked his friend leaning back onto the couch.
“Hmm…we can’t stay here all break…shiranai*~” Shako was playing with her straw staring at her drink.
“How about going to the amusement park?” he suggested.
“II NA!* Let’s go! Let’s go!” Shako suddenly bounced onto her feet, jumping in joy.
“Hai, hai calm down. We’ll go TOMORROW so there’s no need to get all excited.”
“Hai~” Shako was pouting because Daiki was treating her like a six year old.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Uwaaaa! Look at all the rides! Dai-chan let’s go on THAT one first!” Shako just happened to point towards the biggest rollercoaster in the whole park.
“….Shako…do you want to kill me…?” Daiki looked frightened. Even though he enjoyed roller coasters, he had his limits.
“Come on Dai-chan! Where’s your sense of adventure? Masaka*….” Shako’s gave Daiki *that* look. “You’re chicken aren’t you?” She burst out laughing.
“Eh? Me? Chicken? Do you know who you’re talking to? I’m the GREAT Arioka Daiki! I’m not afraid of ANYTHING and DEFINITELY NOT afraid of some PUNY rollercoaster!” Daiki was letting his ego get to him.
“Oh really?” Shako’s expression changed into one full of excitement. “Let’s go then Dai-chan! The line’s getting longer!” She grabbed him by the elbow and started dragging him into the line.
“….what have I just gotten myself into?” Daiki was mumbling to himself while smacking his forehead repetitively.
Shako and Daiki sat together for the ride. Daiki started to panic as soon as the bars were pushed onto his shoulders. He was trapped. No way to get out now… The cart jerked forward. “Please keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times. Enjoy.”
“This is going to be fun!” Shako was practically bouncing out of her seat in anticipation. “Nee Dai-chan?”
“…..ah…un…sure…” Daiki’s palms were sweating already. The attendant pushed a green button and the cart went speeding forward. He was caught off guard and was stuck with his head bent downwards. Shako was squealing with delight.
As the rollercoaster climbed up to its peak, cries of “yada!” and “kowai!” filled the air. Daiki’s imagination started to kick in.
OMG what if the cart runs off the tracks? Or what if there’s something wrong with the ride? AH I’m going to die!
Daiki looked over at Shako. For the first time throughout the whole ride, she had her head down with her eyes shut tightly. He watched her for a few seconds. When he felt the cart tipping over the edge, he grabbed Shako’s hand which was clutching onto the handle bar. The cart zoomed downwards and Daiki had that stomach-in-your-throat kind of feeling. Shako was screaming beside him with her eyes still shut.
The cart finally leveled out and Shako reverted to her bubbly self as cart went over the last bit of track. When the rollercoaster was over and the cart stopped, Daiki was still holding Shako’s hand. “Ano…you can let go now Dai-chan. It’s over. Plus I kinda need to get up.” Daiki didn’t realize that he was still clutching onto her hand.
“Eh? Ah! Gomen!” he quickly let go of her hand. The two exited the ride.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Kyahahaahhaha! Dai-chan you were SO scared! You should have seen your face! Hahahaha!” Shako couldn’t stop laughing. “So much for the GREAT Arioka Daiki! Not afraid of anything? Kyahahaha! You even grabbed my hand!” She changed her voice,“Wash the babi scwared? Do you want your mama Dai-chan?”
“Oi! What about you? I saw you with your eyes all closed when we were about go down the drop. I…grabbed your hand…so……you wouldn’t be scared! Yeah! That’s it!” Daiki was happy he came up with an excuse.
“I just don’t like the drops, that’s all. But you! Kyahahaha” She burst out into a whole new fit of giggles. Daiki knew that he’d never hear the end of this.
The two were walking around the park when Daiki saw something.
Kekeke time for payback!
He smirked, thinking about his plan. “Nee Shako, let’s go in there next!” He exclaimed pointing towards the haunted house.
“Eh?...ano…That’s okay, you can go in without me…I’ll just stay right here.” Shako’s smile disappeared and it was replaced with a look of worry.
“Hey! That’s not fair! I went on the rollercoaster with you. You have to come with me now. Anyway, haunted houses are no fun alone!” This time, Daiki was pulling Shako along.

“Dai-chan kowai!” Shako was clutching onto Daiki’s arm as she was shuffling through the building.
“Look who’s the scaredy cat now! Come on Shako it’s all fake anyway.”
“But it’s scary!!!” Shako grabbed onto his arm tighter when she saw something hanging from the ceiling. The two were slowly walking towards the exit when a person jumped out of a corridor. “KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Shako screamed and fell to the floor. She was curled up into a ball, hugging her knees. Daiki nearly tripped over her, completely un-phased by the person.
“Shako are you okay?” Daiki patted her back.
“No…I just want to get out of here.” Shako replied. Daiki swore that he heard muffled sniffles.
“Hai hai, issho ni ikou*.” He turned around and crouched so that Shako could climb onto his back.
“Arigatou..” She mumbled as Daiki carried her. He could feel that the shoulder of his shirt was wet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once in the light Daiki let Shako off his back. She immediately ran behind a stall so she could hide her tears. It was embarrassing that she cried in front of him.
“Shako!” Daiki ran after her.
“Don’t follow me! I hate you!” Shako screamed through her tears.
Daiki froze in his tracks. He had never heard a girl say that they hated him…Then again…he didn’t have any female friends other than Shako. He sighed and continued to run after her. “I’m sorry Shako! I didn’t know you were scared!”
“OF COURSE YOU DID YOU IDIOT! I TOLD YOU I DIDN’T WANT TO GO IN!” she finally stopped running and yelled at him. He silently walked up to Shako, grabbed her wrist and started pulling her towards an ice cream stand.
“Nani shitten no*? Where the hell are you taking me?” Shako protested as Daiki dragged her along.
“Shut up! I’m making it up to you.” He sat her down at one of the many tables and walked away. Shako couldn’t see where he went, but decided that it was best for her to stay where she was. Daiki came back with a big ice cream sundae. He placed it in front of Shako and sat down across from her. “Go ahead. I hope you like ice cream…” He was looking away clearly embarrassed.
“Aww! Thanks Dai-chan! I’ll accept your apology….”
“Really? Thanks Shako!” Daiki was relieved.
“….If you ride on another rollercoaster with me,” she finished her sentence.
“Eh?!?”
“I won’t forgive you then~” Shako put down her spoon and crossed her arms.
“Fine I’ll go. Hurry up and finish your ice cream, I want to get over with this as quickly and painlessly as possible. Here I’ll help you.” He took the spoon from the table, scooped up a spoonful of ice cream and ate it.
Eh?!?! Indirect kiss! OMG…oh wait…It looks like he doesn’t care…
“What are you staring at? Hai you too. I bought it for you in the first place and you’re not eating?” He held out a spoonful of ice cream to Shako. Remembering that Daiki didn’t care about indirect kisses she decided that she wouldn’t either and ate the ice cream from the spoon.
CHOTTO MATTE! He just fed me?!? Eh?!?!?
“So you wanna tell me why you freaked out so much back there?” Daiki started the conversation.
She shook her head trying to ignore her thoughts.“Eto… Well…To make a long story short…My Ojii-chan really loved horror movies and that kinda stuff. …He was…well you could say obsessed with it…and he tried to force that onto me. Thing is…I was only seven when he started showing me his videos and scaring me whenever I was being babysat at his house. He was absolutely crazy…I loved him though ‘cause well…he’s my jii-chan…but isn’t that kinda creepy? So yea… I get really scared of anything having to do with horror.”
“Ah~ I get it now.” Daiki finished the sundae and threw the container away in a nearby garbage can.
“Dai-chan let’s go now.” Shako started grinning from ear to ear.
“Eh? Where?” He had a puzzled look on his face.
“To another rollercoaster baka! Remember you promised? Hmmm…I want to go on…that one!” After eating a sundae, one would expect Shako to choose a small rollercoaster ride….Unfortunately for Daiki, she chose not the biggest this time, but the SECOND BIGGEST rollercoaster!
“Nee Shako.. I think…..you’re REALLY trying to kill me….” Daiki said as she dragged him again by the elbow towards the grand attraction.
